Emma P. Thornton was born on November 28, 1950 in Woodville, GA to the late Molly Lattimore and Benny Powell. She was the third child of four children. She attended and graduated from Greene County High School. A few years later, Emma moved to Brooklyn, NY where she attended Pratt Institute as an Engineer Tech Student and was employed as a Bank Teller at Manhattan Bank for many years. In 1987, she returned to her childhood home in Woodville, GA where she met her husband George E. Thornton who preceded her in death December 20, 2022. Emma and George were united in holy matrimony and spent the rest of their days in White Plains, GA.
Emma is survived by 5 children, Melanie Miller of White Plains, Ga., Kevin Miller (LaWanda) of Greensboro, Ga., Jeri Weaver of White Plains, Ga., Kimia Flournoy (Kareem) of Atlanta, Ga., and Jacqueline βNinaβ Williams (Antonio) of Smyrna, Ga. She had three siblings; Benny Roger Powell (Preceded in Death), Molly Powell of Queens, NY, Linda Lattimore of Stone Mountain, Ga., Three Sisters-In-Love; Addie Bowden of Decatur, Ga., Pauline Heath of Baltimore, MD, Berenza McElderry of Decatur, Ga and One Brother-In-Love Charlie Thornton of White Plains, Ga.
Emma had 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins who dearly loved and cherished her. Emma departed this earthly home on April 26, 2026 to be with our Lord.
Funeral service will be held Friday, May 1, 2026 from the Second Baptist Church, White Plains, GA at 2pm with Pastor Stanley Peak, Eulogist.
