Willie Mae Stephens, a devoted educator, faithful servant, and beloved pillar of her community, was called home after a life richly lived in service to others.
Born on August 3, 1946, to the late Will Jewell and Viola Jewell, Willie Mae was the youngest of six children. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Rosa, John, Sarah, Charlie, and Bobby. From an early age, she demonstrated a heart for service, a love for learning, and a quiet strength that would guide her throughout her life.
She graduated from Corry High School in 1964 and went on to attend Fort Valley State College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in English education. Immediately following graduation, Willie Mae began her lifelong calling as an educator at her alma mater in 1969 at Corry High School in Greene County, where she taught high school English and inspired countless students.
In 1973, she married the love of her life, Melvin Stephens, and together they built a strong and loving family. From this union, two children were born, Monte and Marty, who were among her greatest joys. She was also a proud and loving grandmother to four grandchildren: Camden, Daniel, William, and Michaela, each of whom she cherished deeply.
Her educational career continued at the Hancock County School System. However, she later returned home and continued her teaching career with the Greene-Taliaferro County School System, where she dedicated over 30 years of service. Even after retirement, her passion for education and her unwavering commitment to her community led her back into the classroom, including a brief tenure with the Oglethorpe County Board of Education. In total, she devoted 40 years to shaping young minds, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, discipline, and love for learning.
Beyond the classroom, Willie Mae was a faithful, life-long, and active member of St. Paul Baptist Church. She served diligently by teaching Sunday School, singing in the Senior Choir, and coordinated multiple youth and adult programs, and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Her faith was evident not only in her service but in the way she lived her life—with humility, grace, and compassion.
Willie Mae Stephens will be remembered as a woman who never truly left the classroom, because teaching was not just her profession—it was her purpose. She poured into generations of students, encouraged her community, and exemplified what it means to live a life of service. She loved to laugh, take pictures, and was always available to listen and share a quick or even long conversation that made you feel seen and heard. She leaves behind adored stepchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
Her legacy lives in the countless lives she touched, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely.

Monte and Marty:
What a joy it was to teach with your mother at GTCHS. It seems like it was just yesterday. That big bright smile and that "magical" laughter brings a smile to my face even today. Please know how sorry I am for your loss but also remember how much she loved the two of you and how proud she was of you both. Mrs. Stephen's is smiling and laughing with our Savior and one day we will see her and hear her again. Love to you both.
