Obituary For Garyon “Gary” Harp

In person signing of the book and viewing will be 12noon - 6pm Friday, February 27, 2026 in the chapel of West Gadsden Funeral Home.

Celebration of life will be 1pm Saturday , February 28, 2026 at Galilee Baptist Church 904 S 16th St. Gadsden, AL 35901. Burial Lincoln Hill Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Grady E. Robinson, Jr.,Eulogist


Garyon "Gary" Harp, who departed this life on February 17,2026, at the age of 75.

Born on June 19, 1950 in Gadsden, AL to the late Carlton Harp, Jr. And Lula Mae Gary, Garyon Harp, lived a life marked by resilience, complexity, strength, and growth. He was a man who carried both burdens and wisdom, and whose journey reflected perseverance through life's many challenges.

Garyon Harp proudly served his country in the United States Army, during the Vietnam era, stationed in Berlin, Germany. His service was a reflection o his courage and commitment, and it remained an important part of his life story. Soon after, he attended college where he received an Associate's Degree in Mathematics.

He was also a gifted carpenter, able to build and create with his hands in ways that spoke louder than words. Without formal training, he crafted furniture and projects that stand today as lasting reminders of his talent, patience, and quiet brilliance,

H e was a devoted Deacon of the Galilee Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama, where he was also a member, who enjoyed spending Sunday mornings with his late mother He attended his home church as a child where his great uncle, Rev. E.L. Gary was the pastor.

Beyond his skills and service, Garyon, was a man of soul. He found joy in music, especially the sounds of funk and elassic R&B, along with playing the piano at a young age. He loved good home cooked sou food, family moments, playing chess, watching westerns, action movies and Marvel. He also enjoyed the simple comforts of home and nature. He spent many days enjoying the beautiful sun and watching nature, as he sat outside.

Those who knew him understood that his life was not without hardship. Yet even through struggle, he remained present in his own way, and his life leaves behind lessons of endurance, humanity, and reflection.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lula Mae 'Gary' Watters (Ed Watters) and Carlton L. Harp , Jr., his dad; his grandparents: Jessie B. Gary and Tom Gary, along with Fannie Johnson and Carlton L. Harp, Sr.; his many aunts and uncles, including Magdalene and Deacon Wiley Turner, Elizabeth Sutton and Rev. Jimmy Horton, along with many cherished family members and cousins,

He is survived by his aunt, Betty Horton; his brother, Carlton Harp III (Wanda Harp); children, Councilwomar Angela Renee Prattis (Derrick S. Prattis, Sr.); Garron D. Johnson (Antwanette Hill); grandchildren, Tyré Macon Julie McDonald.), DeChé Prattis, and Derrick Prattis Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah McDonald, Jace Macon Journie Macon, and J'anna Macon; nephews and neice, Carlton Harp IV, Catrice Harp, and Carlton Harp V. Along with many cousins and friends, including significant other, Lucy Johnson; lifelong best friend, James Macon; lifelong friend, Paulette Macon; and helpful family friend, Endell Wood

They will carry forward his memory, his stories, and the impact he made on their lives. Though he is no longer with us physically, his spirit lives on in the lives he touched, the things he built, and the love that remains The family asks that he be remembered not only for the struggles he faced, but for the strength he showed, the service he gave, and the life he lived.
