West Gadsden announces the passing of Mrs. Katherine Bothwell, 79, of Ashville, AL who passed away Saturday, February 7, 2026, at her Residence. Mrs. Bothwell is survived by her loving family. We ask that you please keep this family in your heart and prayers during their time of bereavement.

In person signing of the book and viewing will be 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2026 with a family hour 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of West Gadsden Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2026 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 33620 US-231, Ashville, AL 35953. Burial Ashville city cemetery. Pastor Gary Robinson, Officiating.

Katherine was born on September 29, 1946, in Ashville, Alabama to Wallace and Annie V. Looney. She attended Ashville Colored High School. After the construction of a new facility the name changed to Ruben Yancy School. As a child she attended Evergreen Baptist Church later moving her membership to Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Ashville, Alabama under the leadership of Rev. Gary Robinson Jr. Mother Robinson and Katherine shared a special bond.

Katherine loved being with family for the holidays or any day, where the grandchildren couldn’t do anything wrong. Christmas was especially some of the best times spent at Granny’s. She was a great cook and baker. From cooking large holiday meals with the fixings with many cakes and pies, and her world famous “SNAKIN CAKE” being a dessert in its own class, to a Sunday dinners after church or a meal for the family stopping by on their way home from work, so they didn’t have to cook. Before leaving her house after any together, playing a hand or two of spade was a must, with house rules applying. What was a Saturday without watching Coach Saban and Alabama Football; she loved a good football game and Alabama is her team. Iron Bowl 2025, she was in the hospital she stayed woke to watch that game until the last snap. She loved flowers, she loved petty roses, but hydrangeas were her favorite. With her green thumb, she could grow any flower and tell you how to grow them also. She would work in her flower beds for hours, getting it just right. She loved fashion and accessorizing was a must, jewelry, shoes and a hat on Sunday for church with matching purse.

Katherine had no job that she did not perform well. Her first job was at a restaurant cooking and baking. After relocating to Atlanta, she was a welder for General Motors. Deciding to return to Alabama for safety reasons, she was a seamstress at sewing factories. She later moved to making alterations for the public along Billy Parker whom she also coached softball with. For better pay, she gained employment with Tyson Foods where she worked as a team member until her injury that led to her early retirement. In her spare time, she made clothes for herself and her children and weddings and prom dresses for others.

Gaining her wings on February 7, 2026, leaving her earthly home, she will be welcomed by her husband Billy E. Bothwell, daughter Marilyn D. (Julius Sr.) Cook, whom she missed dearly. Her mother and father, Wallace and Annie V. Looney, her sister Wonda Faye Williams, and a brother Nathaniel Looney.

In 1967 she married Billy Eskel Bothwell; in their union they welcomed seven children, Marilyn D. (Julius, Sr.) Cook, Billy M. (Chyrstel) Looney-Bothwell, Anthony (Brenda) Looney-Bothwell, Yolanda M. (Darren, Sr.) Cook, Kelvin Maurice (DeAnne) Bothwell, Karen V. (Kenny) Burkes and Marvin Bothwell. Granting her Granny/Grandma to Dr. Lakrishia (DeAngelo) London, Julius (Abril) Cook, Jr, Sharrissa Cook, Contessia (Carolina) Cook, Mauriceana Bothwell, Brandi Looney, Yvonda Cook, Dr. Anthony Kyle (Brittany) Looney, Kendric (Katie) Cook, Darren (Brianna) Cook Jr, MarKavier Bothwell, MarDayus Bothwell, Mar’kia Bothwell- Lindsdey, Ki’Jana Bothwell-Lindsey, Tyra Bothwell, Jacobbi Burkes, Rianna Looney, Billy Ryan Looney, Jada Bothwell and MarZander Bothwell. And Greatgranny to: Dre’Shan Cook, Nylah Cook, Karys Williamson, MarDayus Bothwell Jr., MoriPheus Bothwell, Laiken Bothwell, Lynnox Looney, Kayden Looney and Mycah Cook.

Katherine is sister and friend to Mary Ann Looney, Ella Bothwell, Joe Looney, James Looney, Willie Looney Sr., Wonda Faye Williams, Shirley Bonner, Charlotte Bothwell and Ann Lilly.
