Mary L. Key, 86, of Gadsden, passed away Saturday October 24, 2020. Mary Lee Key was born on July 1, 1934 in Waverly, AL where she was raised by her parents until they moved to Gadsden, AL in 1944. She was educated in the Gadsden City school system during her formative years and completed her education in Philadelphia, PA. She further her education in the nursing field where she received a degree as a Nursing
Assistant with high honors and accolades.
Soon after, Mary was employed at the Rydal Park Medical Center in Jenkintown, PA. She had a prestigious work ethic and her colleagues and patients loved her dearly. During the early 90’s she transitioned to private duty nursing until she retired in 2001.
While living in Philadelphia she met and married Huelon Ellis Key where they raised 3 children. After the passing of Mr. Key, Mary moved back to Gadsden with her daughter’s family and assisted in the raising of her grandchildren.
Mary accepted Jesus Christ at an early age at First Baptist Church in Green Pastures. In Philadelphia, she continued her faith walk under the spiritual teachings of Pastor Gordon S. Houston at The Christian Church of Philadelphia.
When she returned to Gadsden, she joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in East Gadsden under the leadership of Rev. Willie J. Sayles and then
several years later under Pastor Z. Andre Huff. She was a faithful steward of God. She sang on the choir in Philadelphia and was a member in the Missionary Society ministry at Mt. Zion.
Some of Mary’s hobbies she enjoyed was singing, sewing, crocheting, cross stitching, knitting, going on cruises and traveling to various destinations around the globe. It gave Mary great pleasure to get together and spend time with her family and friends.
Mrs. Key was preceded in death by her father Willie O. Macon, her mother Lular L. Macon, her siblings: Rufus Macon, Isabell Oliver Richardson, Eddie Lee Barnes, Sylvia ViAnn Macon, Roosevelt Macon, Paula Irene Macon, John L. Macon and Lula Pearl Eberhardt.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories a devoted daughter Crystal R. Knight, AL; two sons Larry D. Thomas, AL and Charles D. Richardson, PA. (4) grandsons, Quinton L. Kennedy, NC; John W. Lee, PA; Gary C. Gaskin, AL; Isiah Richardson, PA; (3) granddaughters, Courtney M. Knight, NC; Shetara Richardson, PA; Chelsea R. Knight, AL, (2) great- grandchildren, Mason L. Kennedy, NC and Gabrielle C. Gaskin, AL. Siblings: Paulette Ilene Macon, PA, James E. Macon, IN and Celestine R. Macon, AL.
Special friends: Wilma Griffin, PA; Faye Edwards, Marcia Kendrick, Jean Taylor and Ruby Brisker all of Al and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial Services will be Saturday, November 7, 2020 3 P.M at Mt. Zion Baptist Church East Gadsden | Pastor Z. Andre' Huff officiating
