Mr. James D. Sumpter,77, of Gadsden, AL passed away on Monday, July 16, 2024
Mr. James Dorsey Sumpter was born on August 9,1946 to the late union of Willie Joe & Hattie Mae Sumpter.
He departed this life on July 16,2024.
Mr. Sumpter confessed Christ at an early age and united with First Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend E.L. Gary.
James enjoyed traveling at an early age. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle and was affectionately called, “10 speed.”
He worked for Freeman Motors for many years and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and eating good food.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Joe & Hattie Mae Sumpter; his siblings, Robert Sumpter, George Sumpter, Bessie Sumpter, Jimmy Sumpter, Edna Lee Jordan, Ella Mae Childs; nephews, Lewis Sumpter, Herman Edwards, Dwight Sumpter and Reginald Davis; niece, Tonya Shears; sister-in-law, Lora Mae Sumpter; brother-in-law, Tommy Childs and Homer Lee Jordan.
James is survived by two sisters, Mary Frances Butler and Betty Jean Sumpter of New York; seven nieces, Loretta (Lovell) Marrie, Tanya Sumpter, both of Gadsden, AL, Joyce Elaine (John) Marrie of Texas, Tamika Jordan of Montgomery, AL, Bianca, Yolanda, and Janice Butler of New York; nephews, Ashante Jordan of California, Stedric (Latosha) Jordan of Gadsden, AL, Eugene Sumpter of New York, Eric (Ashley) Childs of Birmingham, AL, Tommy Childs Jr. and Deric (Denise) Childs, both of Attalla, AL, Greg Childs of Mississippi, Reggie (Antoinette) Sumpter of Boston, Mass and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be Wednesday, July 24, 2024 from 12noon-6pm.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 12:30 at First Baptist Church, Alabama City. Eulogist: Pastor Samuel Jackson. Interment: Rainbow Memorial Garden.
