Mother Abbie Lomax Little, one of 20 children, was born December 22, 1922 to the late Mr. Judge and Mrs. Carrie Smith Lomax. Ms. Abbie entered into peaceful, eternal rest on Friday, May 31, 2019 at her daughter’s home in Jackson, MS. Mrs. Little accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at St. Peter Rock Baptist Church in Beauregard, MS. She later joined Sardis M.B. Church, Hazlehurst, MS when she started married life. She later maintained membership at St. James M.B. Church, Hazlehurst, MS for decades before health concerns required her relocation to Jackson. The qualities of a quick wit, loving and humble heart and a complex spirit, enabled Mrs. Little to successfully engage a variety of people and situations. Mrs. Little life of hard work started with farming at home, to bus rides to the Mississippi Delta to pick cotton. Throughout life as a single, then wife and mother, she supplemented her income as a domestic. She was adept at pressing and curling hair, quilting, selling fresh vegetables and large brown eggs. Her culinary and baking skills are well known in Hazlehurst. Mrs. Little retired as a private sitter. Ms. Abbie, as she was known, never turned away a hungry soul. She often gave of the abundance of her vegetable garden. After a quick “nod”, Ms. Abbie was energized to start another work project. She took on household repairs with confidence. Ms. Abbie often exchanged plant clippings with everyone, to ensure a beautiful flower garden. Ms. Abbie believed that education was vial for success in life and led by example. She obtained her G.E.D. from Copiah Lincoln Jr. College, Wesson, MS in her 50s. She then learned to drive and obtained her license. Spiritual growth for her family was instilled at home and through regular church attendance and associated activities. Rearing children in the turbulent 60s found Ms. Abbie demanding and receiving respect from both sides, during a local boycott. After a tragic car wreck in the early 70s, Ms. Abbie took on the full time care of four young grandchildren. They benefitted from expectations already in place in the family. She declared that the Lord will make a way. Secure in Ms. Abbie’s love for them, all her children were able to share her with the world. She will be missed by so many.
