Dr. George H. Armstrong transitioned on January 28, 2025, at the University of MS Medical Center. He was the second child and only son of John and Loree (Kyles) Armstrong born in Repton, Alabama on March 13, 1936. After graduating from high school, George attended Knoxville College in Knoxville, TN majoring in Chemistry. After graduating from Knoxville, Dr. Armstrong taught science and chemistry in Eufaula, Alabama. While matriculating at Atlanta University, he obtained his MS in Chemistry, and taught High School science in Gainesville, GA. After completing his MS in Chemistry, he was hired as a chemist at General Tire and Rubber in Akron, Ohio. While employed at General Tire and Rubber, he began working on his doctorate in Polymer Science at Akron University, Akron, Ohio. Due to a lay-off in the industry, he began teaching chemistry at Voorhees College in Denmark, SC.
Later, in his career, he obtained employment at the following corporations: Union Carbide, Libby Owens Ford Company, Alcoa, Revlon, and Tevco. During his employment with these companies, Dr. Armstrong secured fourteen (14) patents for his work.
Dr Armstrong met the love of his life, Alfredlene Thomas, a first-year elementary teacher in Eufaula, Alabama. They were married on August 21, 1960. To this union, two children were born, a daughter, Jacquese, and a son, George Michael.
In 2002, after retiring from the corporate world, Dr. Armstong joined the faculty at Tougaloo College in Jackson, MS. His focus was on enhancing the science and math skills of students who attended an HBCU school. He was concerned about HBCU students’ inability to obtain meaningful internships with many of the chemical companies in the United States. With his involvement in this area, he was able to contact individuals he had met along his professional path forming a partnership with many companies. Dr. Armstrong did not send the students to the companies, he often accompanied them to ensure they would gain the experience needed to be successful in that industry.
Dr. Armstrong was either involved or a member of several social and civic organizations: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Black Chemical Associations, Toastmasters, Sunday School teacher, Worship Leader and Lay Speaker, Knoxville College Alumni Association, and many more.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three of his four sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory and his contributions to the educational arena, his loving and faithful wife, Alfredlene T. Armstrong, his daughter Jacquese, his son Michael, and his sister Rosa. In addition, many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and close cousins.
