Obituary For Gerald McKinley Gettis

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., Cynthia Church of Christ Holiness (USA), 3502 N.Shellrock Road, Jackson, MS 39213.

Gerald McKinley Gettis, son of Richard Shaw and Doris Pow, was born on August 8, 1974 at he Aberdeen Hospital, Aberdeen, MS. He attended Aberdeen School District were he graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1992. After graduation Gerald attended Hinds Community College for a while before going to Barber School.

He accepted Christ at an early age and attended New Hebron Missionary Baptist Church in Egypt, MS and then later Church of God of Prophecy with his mother in Aberdeen, MS. Upon his untimely death he attended Cynthia Church of Christ in Jackson, MS.

Gerald is preceded in death by both his grandparents, Virgie and Lavern Gettis and Cleveland James and Gussie Mae Shaw, his step-mother Beverly Handy, mother in law Evelyn Clark and his granddaughter Kinley Michelle Dorsey "Sweetie".

On June 1, 2002 he was united in holy matrimony to Tyjuana Dorsey in Jackson, MS. This union was blessed to share four children: Cortnie Dorsey, Gerald Gettis, Jr., Austin Gettis and Cameron Gettis all of Jackson, MS.

Anyone who knew Gerald knew one thing, he was a hard diligent worker, He didn't mind working and he always gave his best performance. He drove for Loomis for many years and was employee of the month repeatedly there. He also worked for Nissan, spent four years in Iraq working for KBR, worked for Trustmark and was employed with Shred-It for eight years. Gerald was well known for his love for his family and friends, being drama free and enjoying life to the fullest. He was a dedicated husband, devoted father and all around family man. He was always available a for advise and a helping hand when needed. He never met a stranger, and he loved to eat.

He will forever be remembered and cherished in the lives of his siblings which include: five brothers, Alphonso Johnson of Hollywood, California, Richard Shaw, Jr. of Jackson, Mississippi, Stanley Gettis of Phoenix, Arizona, Blake Stoner of Atlanta, Georgia and Shimon Shaw of Jackson, Mississippi; his sister, Nancy Dobbs of Aberdeen, Mississippi, two step-sister, Jessica Pow and Angelica Poe both of West Point, Mississippi, a special sister, Latoya Terrell of Aberdeen, Mississippi. He will forever be missed by his niece Baillee and nephews, Jaqwun, Kaelab, Eliijah, Liam , Omari and Phillips, Jr.

Gerald impacted everyone he came into contact with whether family, friends, or co-workers. He wanted to see everyone foing well, being successful,loving life and each other. Just being around him gave you a daily dose of positivity.
