Funeral services will be Monday, September 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., St. Luther M.B. Church, 1040 Banks Street, Jackson, MS 39203 with burial in Springhill Christian Center Cemetery, 1518 Springhill Road, Raymond, MS 39154.
Marcus Dwayne Thompson was born on July 30, 1978, to the late Jimmy Nolan Horton and Harriet Jean Thompson, in Jackson, MS. He was Harriet’s only child. He departed this life on Monday, September 2, 2019 in Decatur, GA.
Marcus, affectionately called “Noonie” by family members and “Cockalock” by some of his closest friends was raised in the West Jackson Community. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Luther M.B. Church in Jackson, MS by Rev. Charles E. Polk, Sr. Marcus was active in the youth department and a faithful member of the Youth Choir ministry. He was one of many cousins drafted to participate in the church’s beautification club’s baby contest. Marcus began his formal education in the Jackson Public School System. He attended Blackburn Middle School; Wingfield Provine High Schools, respectively. He loved his and enjoyed spending quality time with them, especially reminding his younger brother Patrick, that he was the oldest. He had a smile for everyone he met and enjoyed making his family laugh whenever he entered the room, sometimes with jokes that were not funny.
He enjoyed playing basketball, video games, and posting scriptures on Facebook to encourage others to give their lives to Christ and put on the new man. Marcus was a gentle spirit. He held various jobs over the years, employed with Allied Enterprises, landscaping and other contractual work. He also enjoyed college football and was a huge JSU fan and supporter. He was preceded in death by his father Jimmy N. Horton, grandparents Lucille Thompson; Nolan and Maggie R. Horton and his aunt Pearl H. Beck.
Left to cherish his memories are his mother Harriet Thompson, of Lithonia, GA.; step-mother Patricia S. Horton; his brother, Patrick Nolan Horton of Madison, MS, five uncles: Gregory (Doris) Thompson, Clarence (Charlene) Thompson Sr., of Fort Mitchell, Al, Michael Thompson of Terry, MS, Reginald Thompson of Jackson, MS and Judge (Louise) Horton of Terry, MS; six aunts: Jacqueline Elaine Thompson of Jackson, MS, Shelia (Aubrey) Blount of Stockbridge, GA, Genora (Louis) McDaniel, Bettye H. Tyler of Jackson, MS, Roberta (Clarence) Williams of Raymond, MS, and Frances H. White of Clinton, MS. Others mourning his demise include three great aunts, and a host of cousins, relatives and lifelong friends.
