Funeral services will be Thursday, January 23, 2020, 11:00 a.m. Pearl Street A.M.E. Church, 2519 Robinson Street, Jackson, MS 39209 with burial in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, 430 McCluer Road, Jackson, MS 29209.

Morgan Coleman was born January 13, 1935, to the late Will Matthew Coleman and Norma Pippens Coleman in Wylam, Alabama. He was the fifth child of eight children. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Maybelle Winn, James Rosamund Coleman, Matthew Coleman, George Coleman, and Norma Coleman Mayfield. Morgan confessed his life to Christ at an early age at St. Paul A.M.E. Church and was baptized by Reverend Robinson. Morgan graduated from Wenonah High School in 1953. Immediately, upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his country faithfully for eight years as a private, sergeant, and reservist. He earned an associate’s degree from Daniel Payne College in 1958. He attended Allen University and New York University, receiving a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree respectively. Morgan was united in holy matrimony to the late Louise Clemons Coleman in 1960. To this union two beautiful daughters were born, Cheryl and Audrey. Morgan was very intelligent and was always in pursuit to further his education, receiving a technical/occupation certificate from Adelphi University and University of Detroit. He eventually became a licensed social worker. Morgan served as a case worker and supervisor with the New York City human resources department with the state of New York. He became the assistant director of development at Tougaloo College. He later transitioned into a director at Friends of Children of Mississippi. Morgan had a passion for helping others and desired to assist them in achieving their greatest potential. In the mid-eighties, Morgan became a field officer 2 Probation/ Parole officer and case manager with the Mississippi Department of Corrections. He worked tirelessly with the Mississippi Department of Corrections and later became employed with FEMA and the Small Business Association as a disaster reserve specialist. After dating for more than 20 years (long distance relationship). Morgan married his lovely wife, Fellece Sawyer Coleman, on October 10, 1998. Morgan was an active member of Pearl Street A.M.E. Church where he served as a board member of the Pearl Street Community Development Corporation, Inc. (CDC). He worked with the Summer Feeding Program and was a member of the Pearl Street CDC Food Distribution TEAM; a member of the Hugh Stevens African/Afro American History and Culture Social Action Committee and mentor for children at a local afternoon daycare center. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Morgan was quiet, faithful, and had a zest for life. He loved spending time with family, fishing, and watching sporting events. On January 9, 2020, Morgan was called to his eternal home. He is survived by his devoted and caring wife, Fellece; two daughters: Cheryl Coleman of Greenbelt, MD and Audrey (James) Gray of Brandywine, MD; one step son: Troy (Felicia) Sawyer of Bartlett, TN; one brother: Woodie Coleman (Patricia) of Los Angeles, CA; one sister: Sylvia Webster of Ypsilanti, MI; two brothers-in-law: Clifton Braden of Los Angeles, CA; Levorn Scott “Bubba” of Cincinnati, OH; five grandchildren: Terrance, Noelle, Troy II, Eliza, and Troy III; one great-grandchild: Tristenand; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
