Obituary For Nathaniel L. Stephenson

Our beloved Nathaniel Leon Stephenson passed away peacefully with family by his side on August 28th, 2026, at the age of 77. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, wisdom and generosity that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Born October 4th, 1948, at military base Camp Kilmer in Edison, New Jersey, Nathaniel was the first child of U.S. army soldier Eddie Malone Stephenson and Jessie Dell Tellis Stephenson. Nathaniel was raised between Somerset and New Brunswick before moving to Highland Park, N.J. He attended Highland Park High School where he graduated in the Class of 1966. "Nate the Great" was widely recognized as one of Highland Park High School's finest athletes of all time. A football and baseball standout who played all 4 years, Nate was instrumental in the Owl's drive to become the 1965 Central Jersey Champs. Dubbed “the man with the moves you just can’t teach,” his athletic prowess earned him a full athletic scholarship to Purdue University. But it wasn’t just his skill that people admired, it was his smile that he shared with whoever he met. For over 40 years Nate was an active member of the Building Trades, leading numerous construction sites before retiring from Laborers Local 77. During his working career he contributed to the development of key Central Jersey landmarks including Rutgers Stadium. Even so, the greatest work of his life was built at home. The definition of a family man, Nate took on every role with a loving spirit. He was a big brother, a cool cousin, a generous Uncle, a caring son-in-law, devoted husband, loving father and cherished grandparent. He carried the values instilled in him throughout his entire life, and his astute, protective nature made everyone around him feel safe. He was also an incredible cook who learned classic soul food recipes at the side of his mother and aunts in the kitchen. Nate brought that same flavor and warmth to every table he sat at. In 1991, Nate settled in Bedminster, where he continued building a life full of adventure and connection. He took pride in being a great neighbor and active member of the community, volunteering his time coaching recreational sports such as Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football. He also led the Highland Park Recreation Center for the youth in the community. Coaching became a lifelong role as he never stopped teaching and imparting wisdom on all who crossed his path. Nate’s internal compass led him on a lifetime of adventure. With a natural appreciation for the great outdoors, he loved the beach, the mountains, rivers and parks. Nate turned every outing into a memorable experience, and he always took the scenic route. His favorite pastime was ultimately being with his grandkids and loved ones, particularly on his annual family vacation to Wildwood Crest, NJ. Nate will be remembered as a handsome, fun-loving guy who was adored, admired, and respected by all. He will be remembered by the valuable lessons he taught, and the memories he built to last. For the favors he did for others without expecting anything in return. Nate was predeceased by his parents, his beloved son Derrick Nathaniel Stephenson, and his sisters Pamela Stephenson and Shirley Greene. He is survived by his wife Karen who he loved dearly, along with his children Melisa Stephenson Jordan, Eric Stephenson, Natasha Stephenson, Naquell Stephenson, and Dana Stephenson, along with his seven grandchildren, his brother Eddie, and a host of other relatives and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace and glory.

A Celebration of His Life will be held privately followed by Entombment at the Chapels at Short Hills.
