Mr. Willie Joe West, a lifelong resident of Augusta, GA, passed away at the age of 86 on October 13, 2025.
Born October 14, 1938, in Washington, Georgia, Mr. West began his life of service early, joining the Army Reserves while still in high school before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in Germany with distinction during the Vietnam War and later traveled through-out Europe.
After his military service, Mr. West dedicated more than four decades to various banking institutions including Georgia Railroad Bank and First Union … as a senior collections officer, earning him a reputation for integrity, professionalism, and a tireless work ethic. Mr. West was awarded several accommodations and awards for his work and was a charter member of the Association of Professional Collectors in the state of Florida. After retiring from the banking industry, Mr. West focused on his new passion-art. He opened the store ‘African-Art-West’ in 2005, featuring high end African show pieces sourced from throughout the continent. Known for his steely resolve and masterful culinary expertise, Mr. West was also an avid golfer and checkers player and served as chairman of the Trustee Ministry at Galilee Baptist Church in Augusta.
Mr. West is survived by his devoted nephew, Harvey West; his wife, Carolyn and their three sons; his ex-wife, Classie West and stepdaughter, Allison Samuels; as well as a host of beloved nephews, nieces, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Willie Mae and Harvey West Sr., and each of his 10 siblings.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at 10:00AM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC, with military honors.
