Obituary For Barbara Ann (Garrett) Winingham

Barbara Ann (Garrett) Winingham, of Bowie, TX went home to the Lord on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 5th, at the First Baptist Church of Bowie.

Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie with Pallbearers, Christopher Judy, Andrew Judy, Hance Winingham, Jake Hall, Kevin Browning and Greg Shaw.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 4th, at the White Family Funeral Home in Bowie.

Barbara was the daughter of Henry and Lorine (Lindsay) Garrett, was born on December 16, 1933, in Bowie. She was the granddaughter of John and Delia (Cowart) Lindsay, Miles and Martha (Faulkenberry) Garrett and Jeptha George Stallings. Starting with her great, great, grandfather, her ancestors were all early Montague County pioneers who moved to this area before 1876.

Barbara graduated from Bowie High School in 1950 and attended Midwestern University with a full music scholarship. She was a member of the Texas Governor Shiver’s official band in 1951 and performed at the Governor’s inauguration. Ultimately, she graduated from the Baylor University School of Medical Technology.

Barbara married James Lee Winingham, a life-long resident of Montague, County on September 6, 1952. The Winingham’s initially resided in Fairbanks, Alaska where James was stationed while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Their oldest daughter, Donna Elaine Winingham, was born in Fairbanks in the hospital in which Barbara was employed. The family moved back to Bowie in 1955 when James secured employment with the United States Postal Service and retired after 30 years. Barbara, a registered technologist, worked in the lab of multiple clinics and hospitals during her 35-year career including Westgate Hospital in Denton (9 yrs), establishing the laboratory at the opening of newly constructed Nocona General Hospital (2 yrs) and the Bowie Hospital.

Barbara cited that the greatest achievement of her life was her four children. In addition to Donna born in Alaska in 1955, MarilynJudy (1957), Janet (1962) and David (1967) were born in Bowie.

She became active for the next 20 years in a variety school activity:serving as President of the East Ward PTA, as PTA district president, and as a member of the Texas PTA Board of Directors for 8 years. All children were members of Band during their high school years. Barbara was a member of the Band Parent’s Association and servedin all offices including President (1973). She performed in the annual Band Parents Show for 25 years and was the show’s director on three occasions. She also served as piano accompanist for band students’ solos in regional and state competition for 15 years.

Barbara was a long-term member of the First Baptist Church, Bowie. She served as pianist, soloist and choir director (summer of 1957) and taught a Sunday School Class since 1956.

Charter member of the City of Bowie’s 4B Economic Board

Bowie Senior Citizen Project, Inc. member / volunteer

As appointed by the Governor, she served 25 years as Vice Chairman of the Texas Health Reinsurance System; 4 years on the Texas Education Agency’s Comprehensive Health Advisory Committee and 8 years Texas Affiliate, American Heart Association (AHA) and

served as Chairman of the AHA Risk Task Force

Member of the National Parliamentarian’s Association

Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames 17thCentury and

United Daughters of the Confederacy

Listed in the “Who’s Who in the South”

Texas Farm Bureau’s Pioneer District 3 winner in 2002

She is preceded in death by her brother, Talmadge Garrett and her parents, Henry and Lorine (Lindsay) Garrett (Seeds); stepfather, Charlie O. Seed; niece Anita (Garrett) Jones and Anita’s daughter Laura Brown.

Barbara is survived by her husband, James; daughters: Donna, Templeton, CA; Marilyn and husband, Kenneth Judy of Crawford, TX; Janet Monkres of Forney, TX; David and wife, Beth of Bowie. Grandchildren: Christopher and wife Christine, Andrew and wife Caterina of Southlake and Lindsay Judy of Crawford, Samantha and husband, Jake Hall of Abilene; Hance Winingham of Waco, Gabrielle and husband, Preston Baird of Kingwood, Alexandra Sakel of Tyler and Emma and Houston Crawfis of California. Great-grandchildren: Faith & Luke Judy, Eliana, Micah & Daniel Judy, and Caleb Hall Nephew; Lewis Garrett and wife, Natasha of Coppelland too many cousins to count.
