It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of David Michael Atkins, age 77, of Forestburg, TX on Sunday, June 8, 2025. David was born on January 15, 1948 to Bill and Dorothy Atkins.
David Atkins will be remembered for his kindness, laughter, and the love he shared to many. A celebration of life will be held on June 28th at 11:00 AM at the Forestburg Community Center.
A beloved father, husband, and friend, David touched the lives of many with his fun sense of humor and jovial spirit. His vast experiences provided boundless material for great stories often centered on his youth, his family and his career. He was passionate about his pets who were always easily identifiable due to their obese waistlines as a result of his continuous handouts of treats and his affectionate love towards them. He loved to cook and enjoy a good meal, an occasional cigar, time with his family, camping in New Mexico, bird hunting with a good bird dog and his faith in Jesus.
David was a graduate of Denton High School and attended Tarleton State University on a baseball scholarship. While he originally set out to obtain a degree in veterinarian sciences, he pivoted in 1969 to pursue a career in construction. Professionally, he had an illustrious career and was respected by many in the steel business. He played a key role in many prominent projects, such as the Dallas AT&T, Indianapolis Lucas Oil, and other NFL football stadiums, the Denver Symphony Hall, the first liquified natural gas facility in the United States and the Smithsonian Newseum museum in Washington DC.
He is survived by his wife Elaine Adair Atkins who he was married to for 55 years, his children Matt and wife Christina Atkins, Amy and husband Dudley Boyd, Sean and wife Jana Atkins and Ginny and husband Michael Carter. Known as Poppy, he was especially fond of his grandchildren: Jake Atkins, Cara and husband Derek Slater, Jackson Atkins, Lily Atkins, Lainey Boyd and fiancé Angel Serrano, Will and wife Emmanuelle “Frenchie” Boyd, Maddie Carter, Abby Carter, Luke Peretti, Clay Peretti, SJ Atkins, Claire Atkins and great grandchildren, Liam Boyd, Cade Slater. To the numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who cherished him dearly as a gentle giant, he was simply known as Uncle David.
He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Atkins, father Bill Atkins, brother Don Atkins and sisters Diane Thomas and Debbie Griffin.
David Atkins will be remembered for his kindness, laughter, and the love he shared to many. As the patriarch, he leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories, unconditional love to his family and unwavering friendships to everyone he met.
