It was my pleasure to teach Mark early in my career in the Decatur City School system. He and his family made a deep impression on me, and I always tried to teach with compassion and love for my students as did Mark in his career which I followed with pride. Mark was so talented yet humble and I treasure the memories of Mark and his family. I was so pleased when I saw him and visited with him in the WE. My heart goes out to all of you. Just remember the number of students he touched.

Mark Thomas...my cousin who understood my journey in life. Mark chose to listen even as a young man, rather than judge. He was frank, determined, and compassionate. Mr Thomas played an instrumental part in my families life. He was my son's music teacher for 3 years and would always say, "Mrs. Evans, this boy has too much talent, and I know kids like him love to get involved in so many things", as long as he is a musician, he will be great! Mr Thomas was later introduced to my nieces and nephew and provided them lessons for a year. He instilled discipline, confidence, and resilience in these kids. Mark taught my daughter piano for the last few years. His loss in our lives is deep and we hope and pray that his family, friends and students have joy in their memories and find strength knowing he is with God. He will be deeply missed as we loved him so.

Mr. Mark was my son's piano teacher for about 10 years or so, starting when Jack was around 7, coming to our home weekly. Jack grew to absolutely adore him, looking forward (well most of the time!) to lessons and working with Mr. Mark, and really valuing Mr. Mark's comments and guidance. Mr. Mark was rigorous and talented, but flexible. I credit his teaching style and approach to really engaging Jack and instilling a love for music and piano and nurturing Jack's joy in it! Mr. Mark was firm, but kind, giving Jack space when he felt frustrated while encouraging him to persevere. And he taught Jack so much-- technique, theory, appreciation, all the while allowing Jack room to help select music and pacing that worked well for him. Mr. Mark was a passionate, devoted teacher, who was willing to go above and beyond to continue to challenge and engage his students. He made lessons interesting and fun and also modeled and taught Jack valuable life lessons that were bigger than just playing piano. Even though Jack chose to stop piano lessons as he neared the end of high school, we stayed in touch with Mr. Mark from time to time because Mr. Mark remained interested in what Jack was doing and in encouraging him. Mr. Mark was family to us, and we treasure his memory and his legacy as we grieve his suddenly passing with his own family and celebrate his life.

Mr.Thomas you left us so soon. God needed your hand in directing his Heavily band. You were father to the many students that came through your band program. You saved us from the dangers of life with music and I'm forever Grateful.To the family me and my family will keep you in prayer. My fondest memory of Mr Thomas finding out I actually played a instrument😂😂he was like timeshia as only he could say it you are coming off Symbols and you will play the clarinet I was so scared a week later I was put in beginner band by the end of that semester I was enrolled in intermediate band.
