Mrs. Ellon Francis McDaniel, 97, a 19 year
resident of Villa Rica, Georgia, peacefully
died on Sunday, May 4, 2025, surrounded
by her family at home. She was a member
of First Baptist Church of Villa Rica and a
devoted member of the Sunday School
Sunshine Class.
Born at home on February 26, 1928, in
Terrell, Texas to James Lee and Bertha
Patterson Carson, she was the fourth of
seven children. She was a beloved sister,
mother, spouse, grandmother, aunt,
friend, and colleague. His faithful servant joined her beloved husband, Linwood, her parents,
her brothers James, Charlton, and Rothell, and her sisters Della, Herby, Revelia, and Bernetha,
in a heavenly reunion.
She was a retired Registered Nurse who dedicated her life to supporting others in their health
care for 50 years. Growing up in Terrell she accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized
at Bethlehem Baptist Church. She graduated from W. H. Burnett Colored High School in 1946.
She continued her education at Prairie View A & M College earning her RN Degree in 1951.
While working at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, she was introduced to the love of her
life, Linwood Archie McDaniel, on a blind date in Galveston. They were married on August 31,
1952, in San Mateo, CA at Pilgrim Baptist Church, where they settled down to raise their
family.
She was the first African American RN hired at Mills Memorial Hospital in 1954. She was
featured in the Mill-O-Gram in March 1965, after returning from two years in Monrovia,
Liberia with her husband who was an associate Peace Corps Director. She worked as a
volunteer nurse with the Peace Corps doctors assigned to Liberia. In 1965, the family moved
to New Bedford, MA due to her husband’s job with the Job Corps Center. She worked at St.
Luke’s Hospital until the family relocated to Belle Meade, NJ. There were several other family
moves with her husband’s work with IBM to Potomac, MD, Stamford, CT, Washington, DC, and
Somers, NY. In each location, she continued serving others as a nurse at local hospitals
including the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Children’s National Hospital, and Northern
Westchester Hospital. She retired from the State of New York, Department of Correctional
Services at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in 2002.
Affectionally known as “Sug” by her family and close friends, she is survived by her daughters,
Linda McDaniel, of Villa Rica, GA, Margaret McDaniel, of Lowell, MA, her son and daughter-
in-law, Linwood and Kelly McDaniel, Jr., of Palm Harbor, FL, her daughter and son-in-law
Barbara and Gregory Menchan of Snellville, GA; grandchildren Breyon, Greg, Madison, Laylah,
Darrell, Maria, Miles, and Ella; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She touched
hundreds of lives with her beauty, her generous heart, her kind and caring manner, an
infectious smile, and her devotion to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
There will be a final viewing on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Moloney-Sinnicksons
Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 203 Main Street, Center Moriches, NY 11934.
Immediately following the viewing, there will be a graveside service at Calverton National
Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd., Calverton, NY 11933.
In lieu of �lowers, donations can be made to the Rouse Foundation, 129 Bankhead Highway,
Carrollton, GA 30117. She was a member of the West Georgia Cardiology Nonagenarian (90+)
Club.
