Obituary For Ms. Barbara Atkinson Moss

Ms. Barbara Atkinson Moss Obituary

Ms. Barbara Atkinson Moss was born on February 28, 1949, to the late Calvin Atkinson Jr. and Willie Ruth Atkinson. From her earliest days, Barbara embodied strength, grace, and intelligence. She lived a life defined by service and leadership along with compassion, uplifting those around her. Barbara left an unforgettable mark on every life she touched. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

A true trailblazer, Barbara graduated as valedictorian of the West Fulton High School Class of 1967. She continued her education at the University of Georgia, where she made an enduring impact. She along with 7 other women chartered the Zeta Psi Chapter, of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in 1969. Which was also the first black Greek letter sorority on UGA’s campus. They will forever be known as “ The Great 8”. Her leadership and commitment to creating opportunities for future generations remain a significant part of her legacy. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1971 Cum Laude.

Barbara's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She accepted Christ at a young age and remained steadfast in her devotion throughout her life. In 1990, she became a devoted member of World Changers Church International in College Park, Georgia, where she faithfully worshipped and grew spiritually under the leadership of Dr. Creflo Dollar and Pastor Taffi Dollar. Beginning in 1991, she faithfully served in the Nursing Home Ministry, sharing Christ's love through her kindness, selfless service, and genuine care for others. Barbara's faith was reflected not only in her service but also in the grace and strength with which she faced life's challenges. Her deep relationship with God shaped her character and inspired the love, generosity, and unwavering support she so freely poured into her family, friends, and community.

Professionally, Barbara enjoyed a distinguished career with BellSouth, where she rose to the position of Manager before retiring in 2007. After taking a well-deserved break, her passion for helping others led her back to the workforce in 2016 as a substitute teacher with the DeKalb County School System. Through her work in education, she continued to inspire and encourage young people.

To her family, Barbara was the listening ear, the encourager, the rock, and the heart of the kitchen, always expressing her love through a home-cooked meal. To her neighbors, she was known as a woman who handled her business and affectionately as “the Cake Lady.” She had a smile that could brighten any room and she was self-titled the Queen of Bid Whist.

Barbara was a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend whose greatest joy was her family.

She leaves behind a legacy of love through her two daughters, Adrienne Moss and Nichole Atkinson (Tyrice Bethely). Through her marriage, she lovingly embraced two additional children, Phyllis Moss and Willie R. Moss III (Crescendel Moss). She is also survived by her sister, Celia Atkinson; her brother, Calvin Atkinson (Eva Woods-Atkinson); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Moss Jr.; her parents, Calvin Atkinson Jr. and Willie Ruth Atkinson; and her nephew, Patrick Atkinson.

Though our hearts mourn her absence, we rejoice in knowing that Barbara’s life was one of purpose, faith, and love. Her example will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched, and her memory will forever remain a blessing to all who knew and loved her.

Send flowers to the service of Ms. Barbara Atkinson Moss
