Obituary For Harmon Wooten

MR. HARMON “ J. P.” WOOTEN – AGE 93, - Of Atlanta, Georgia passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023. Our hearts were saddened when our dear and beloved father Mr. Harmon JP Wooten obeyed God’s call to celestial peace on Saturday, September 16, 2023. His kindness in friendship, his radiant smile, and his love for people were the essence of his years of happy living. He loved making you laugh and could tell a joke that would have you crying.

Harmon was the second child born to the late Mrs. Bessie Lee Stamper Wooten and the late Mr. William F. Wooten on Thursday, July 17, 1930, in Chattooga County in the small town of Trion, GA.

During his youth, he was often referred to as “Witsey”, “Skeeter”, “Pete” or “JP”. He, along with his two brothers, Tom and Jimmy were raised by and lived with their grandmother, Mrs. Ella White Stamper and their uncle Buddy (Robert Stamper). Working in the field(s) attending to the farm animals and assisting with chores around the house was a part of his daily duties. Unfortunately, this was an impediment to his educational goals.

Mr. Wooten submitted his life to Christ at an early age and became a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in LaFayette, GA in the Naomi Community. He was an ordained deacon and served in this position at Friendship, Union Hill and Mt. Peria Baptist Church.

He eventually moved to Chickamauga, GA where he met and married the love of his life, the late Mrs. Mary Kathrine Trimble Wooten. To this union, God blessed them with three devoted children, Peggie, Willie, and Van. They shared 45 endearing years together.

JP Was employed with the US Pipe Shop in Chattanooga, TN where he worked for a total of 45 years. After a few years of retirement, and the burning of his home, he moved to Atlanta, GA where he would reside with his daughter Peggie, and her family. He was blessed and enjoyed eight wonderful years until he answered God’s call for his final destination.

His love for his family, friends, church and God, his creator were the admirable traits of Mr. Wooten’s life. His positive influence amongst us has left a lasting impression in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him. “Kindness is a beautiful flower that grows in the garden of love.” We thank God for sharing the life of JP with us. He was preceded by his granddaughter, Patrina Shermease Turner, and son Willie Wooten, two sisters and four brothers.

To cherish his memory and rejoice in the afterglow of his love are his dear children, Peggie Wooten Turner (Sherman), Atlanta, GA and Derrick Van Wooten (Genita), Douglasville, GA one sister, Helen Betty Grimes, Chattanooga, TN three brothers, Rev. O. W. Christopher, Rossville, GA, Michael Frank Wooten, Chattanooga, TN and Danny Wooten, Alabama, two grandchildren, Brutis Finney, San Antonio, TX and Patrick Montgomery, Trion, GA, five great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Betty Jean Wooten, LaFayette, GA, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Wooten will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 12:00 noon at Mt. Peria Baptist Church, 341 Sparks Street, Ringgold, Georgia 30736, with Reverend Jimmy Ingram as the Eulogist, Pastor Edward Ellis, and other Ministers officiating. His remains will lie in state at the funeral home on Friday after 12:00 noon. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 A. M. until the funeral hour. Interment at LaFayette City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Willis Funeral Home, 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Dalton, Georgia 30721.
