Obituary For James Oliver Jett

James Oliver Jett, age 69, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on November 27, 1955, James was a student of Chattooga High School. He worked many years for Dalton Paving and Mohawk Industries, while also pursuing his own entrepreneurial ventures with the same drive and independence that defined his life. James was a hard-working country boy who took great pride in providing for his family, doing whatever it took to make sure those he loved were cared for.

James was a man who loved the simple joys of life like fishing, cooking, grilling, and sharing fresh tomato sandwiches in the summer. He found joy in cooking and, just as much, in telling others how it should be done. A generous man with a big heart for people, James often expressed his love through food and breaking bread - bringing others together with something fresh off the grill or a sweet watermelon on a hot summer day. It was his way of quietly saying, “I love you.” And if you ever ate with him, you likely heard his favorite words of approval—“That’s good eatin’.” He could often be found watching Westerns, football, and boxing on TV, or listening to old-school R&B music, enjoying peaceful moments at home or in the company of friends and family.

James was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Frankie Jett; parents, Molan and Louise Shropshire; sister, Peggy Smith; and nephew, Meko Smith. He is survived by his life partner, Jeanie Marie Marks; daughter, Taquisha Wofford; sons, Jonathan (Whitney) Marks and Shannon (Niielea) Walker; sisters, Wonda (Bennie) Jones and Tonya Shropshire-Ward; many nieces and nephews, plus his nephew Javotte Smith, whom he shared a special relationship with.

James was a proud grandfather to Cherish (Janan) Johnson, Jazmin (Kevonte) Baldwin, Marcus Riley, Tae Walker, Jordan Walker, and Raine Walker; and great-grandfather to Harmony Creamer. He also shared close friendships with David Marks and James Hammond.

Flower bearers and casket bearers will be family members. Funeral services for James Oliver Jett will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Mason Funeral Home, hosted by Willis Funeral Home Services. Viewing will begin at 12:00 Noon., followed by the service at 1:00 p.m., with burial immediately following at Oak Hill Cemetery. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, laughter, and family will live on in all who knew him.
