Alice Austin Winters, affectionately known as Emma Alice, was born on October 28, 1935, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to the late Alice Irene Hughes Austin and Flemming Austin. She was the first-born child and only daughter. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at Center Church of God, where her lifelong faith began.
Alice graduated from Kosciusko High School in 1954, where she met the love of her life, Elihue Winters. Although Elihue was two years ahead of her in school, their love story began after they met in the school gymnasium, and from that moment on, they were inseparable. After graduating, Elihue proudly served in the United States Army for two years. While stationed away from home, he wrote a heartfelt handwritten letter to Alice's father asking for her hand in marriage.
On May 7, 1955, Alice and Elihue were united in holy matrimony in the home of her parents in Kosciusko. Family members often recalled that the couple married on a Wednesday and moved to Evanston, Illinois, that very Saturday to begin building their life together.
Together they were blessed with four children: Alice “Gwen” Gwendolyn Winters, Eileen Ruth Winters-Walker, Elihue “Eddie” Winters, Jr., and Karen Lynn Winters.
While raising their family, Alice devoted herself to creating a loving home. Once her children reached school age, she entered the workforce, but her greatest joy remained being a wife, mother, and homemaker. She became known as the “mother of the neighborhood,” always welcoming family, friends, and anyone in need with an open door, a warm meal, and a caring heart. In Evanston, she was an active member of Second Baptist Church and faithfully supported her children's education as an involved PTA parent and school volunteer.
Following Elihue's retirement, the couple returned to their hometown of Kosciusko in 1992. There, Alice became a devoted member of Mt. Cana Missionary Baptist Church, where she continued to serve God and her community with quiet faithfulness.
Waiting to welcome Alice into eternal rest were her beloved husband, Elihue Winters; her daughter, Eileen Winters-Walker; her son, Elihue “Eddie” Winters, Jr. and her son-in-law, Lee Walker.
Alice leaves to cherish her precious memory her daughters, Gwen Winters and Karen Winters; Her grandchildren, Corey Allen Winters, Allison Elaine Payne, and Austin Gregory Winters; her great grandchildren, Alyssa Nicole Winters and Ellie Islah Russell; Her brother, Milton (Georgia) Austin; Sister-in-law, Georgia (Potts) Austin; And a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, church family, and dear friends whose lives were forever enriched by her love.
