Our beloved Mother Emma Jean Dodd Thompson was born on August 5, 1933, in Kosciusko, Mississippi to the late Lawrence and Ethel Terry Dodd. She was the second of seven children. She accepted Christ at an early age enjoying Buffalo United Methodist Church.
Emma attended various schools in Attala County and graduated from Tipton High School in the class of 1954. In 1958, Emma moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a short period of time before making Chicago her permanent home. In 1964, she married her hometown friend, Charlie Thompson. This union was blessed with two children, and it lasted until November 4, 2017, when he passed away. Emma later found a cherished church home at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church where she truly enjoyed attending worship services. Her faith remained an important part of her life and was a source of comfort and joy.
She was a hardworking and dependable employee for several companies with Dard being her longest employer of 27 years, retired in 1999.
Family was at the heart of who Emma was. She loved talking on the telephone with family and friends reminiscing about memorable times and sharing stories about the people and moments that meant so much to her. She had a remarkable memory and never seemed to forget a story. She treasured family history and took great joy in keeping those memories alive through conversation and laughter. A sweet potato pies and her famous dressing were cherished favorites at family gatherings.
Emma touched many lives and will remain will be remembered fondly for her gentle spirit, warm heart, wonderful sense of humor and unwavering love for her family. Those who knew her will carry forward memories that reflect her character and spirit.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Emma Jean, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt answered the master's call entering into her eternal resting home. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers LD, Terry, Howard, and William Dodd.
To cherish her loving memories, Emma leaves three devoted children: Max (Shirley) Dodd of Olive Branch, MS; Lisa Thompson of Chicago, IL; Dodd (Barbara) Thompson of Baltimore, MD. She is also survived by her sister, Bonnie Fincher, and her brother, James (Ruthie) Dodd; Her grandchildren: Derrick (Chante) Dodd, Cedric (Stephanie) Dodd, Matthew (Ashley) Thompson, Trinell (Chantel) Thompson, Ashley James, Rachel Thompson, and Ariel Thompson. Four great-grandchildren: Maverick Emil, Zoey Savannah, Joseph Michael, and Rhylee Rose and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members and dear friends.
