Obituary For Gillis Harmon
Gillis Harmon was born on January 10, 1961, in Attala County, Mississippi, to Roscoe Thurman and the late Betty Ann Thurman. He attended Long Creek Elementary School and graduated from McAdams High School as a member of the Class of 1980. At an early age, Gillis joined Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful and dedicated member until his health began to fail.
Gillis was a devoted healthcare worker who faithfully served many individuals throughout his career until his retirement in 2023. He was well-liked and deeply loved by those he cared for and worked alongside. On April 24, 2026, at 7:51 a.m., Gillis peacefully transitioned from this life at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
On November 14, 987, Gillis was united in holy matrimony to Mary Jean Luckett-Harmon. Their loving union was blessed with 38 years of marriage. To this union, three sons were born: Jeremy D'Shone Chestnut, Deon Harmon and Jamal Harmon.
Gillis was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Ann Thurman; two grandchildren, Summer and Shundrea Chestnut; his father-in-love and mother-in-love, Mr. and Mrs. Earl J. Luckett; his brother, Kelvin Harmon; his sister-in-love, Mary Hall; his nephews, Turanda McGil Harmon and Devonta Tyrone Harmon and his brothers-in-love William Sherrod Jr. and George Bowls.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories a devoted wife, Mary Jean Harmon; three loving sons, Jeremy Deon, and Jamal Harmon; his devoted father, Roscoe Thurman; his beloved grandchildren, Jamarion, Ka'Darrious, James and Janyla; his siblings, Sherrie J. Sherrod, Judy Harmon, Vivian H. Bowles, Roger Collins, Lannie Harmon, Kelcey Harmon (Beverly), Trenace Coffee (Phillip) and Stacey H. Weatherby; his goddaughters, Kylaand Porsche; his devoted in-laws, Willie Earl, Maxcine, Laura, Jimmy, James and Adell; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and loving friends.

In loving memory of my Dear cousin/ other Brother/ best friend. Gillis! there are no words that best describe the love, and respect that I have always had for you. As I reflect back to our high days, when you would always make certain that you would save me a seat in our classroom, as well as saving me a seat on our high school bus Band trips. I will always remember how you made certain that I had a ride to Pleasant Grove Church Revivals in the Fall. You would pick me up, every night for church, and made certain that I got home safely. We shared so many wonderful memories, at your Mother's house (Cousin Betty Anne) every weekend, eating, laughing, listening to music, and dancing on your Mother's front porch. "Because she definitely did not allow us to go out to the clubs". Cousin, I'm really going to miss your smiling face. Things really are going to be different without you. I thank God for the time he gave us together. The time came when you had to go. For the rest of my life; I'm going to be thinking about you. I'll miss you my buddy, I'll miss you my friend. I promise my love for you, will never end. Rest well in heaven cousin. This is not good bye. I'll see you on the other side. "Save a seat for me".
