James Author Turner, the eighth child of the late Horace and Mavis Turner, was born on October 2, 1941, in Weir, Mississippi.
James accepted Christ at an early age at Weir Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Later in life, he became a faithful member of First Baptist MB Church, where he served under the leadership of Rev. Lee Carson.
James matriculated through the Weir school system and eventually yielded to the adventure and thrill of the open road. James travelled extensively and regularly visited friends and family in Chicago, St. Louis, Ohio and elsewhere. But when his travels slowed, he still enjoyed spending time with friends and family – where he often fried catfish and spun some good Blues on the turntable for all to enjoy.
James is preceded in death by: two sisters – Eddie Delores Hull and Ida Mae Kennedy; and four brothers – Henry Turner, Franklin Turner, Arthur “Bird” Turner and Travis Turner.
James is survived by one son, James Arthur Patterson – “JP” (Lorna) of Racine, WI; six grandkids; nine great-grandkids; one sister, Eula Cooper of St. Louis, MO; two brothers, Horace Turner (Katherine) of Fort Worth, TX and Charles Turner (Onita) of Flint, MI; two sisters-in-law, Claudia Turner of St. Louis, MO, and Gladys Ward of Weir, MS. He also leaves a large and loving group of extended family and friends to cherish his memory: Verna Lou Adams, whom he welcomed into his life during his later years; Inez Patterson, with whom he was blessed to share in the growth and development of their son; his nephew, Nathan Bates, whom he loved like a son; a close cousin, Haywood Hannah, along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
