Mottie Mae McAfee Garland was born in Kosciusko, Attala County, Mississippi on March 9, 1943 to the parents of Dessie Ree Scott and Emmett McAfee, to this union she was the youngest of two children, but she played "big sister" to many other close cousins and friends in the neighborhood.
"Mott" as she was so fondly called, spent her years growing up in both Kosciusko, MS. and Chicago, IL. Her time in Kosciusko was spent with her caring and nurturing grandmother, Annie Bell Scott. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Travelers Rest M.B. Church with her grandmother.
While in Kosciusko, Mott received her education in the Kosciusko Public School District where she met and married her "True Love" and "Soul Mate", Daniel L. Garland, Jr. "Danny Boy", at a young age. This union that was truly destined to be and blessed by GOD produced five beautiful and devoted children.
Although she spent a large part of her life as a wife, housewife and mother, she did work as a Teacher Assistant in the Attala County School District where she had the pleasure of working with her mother-in-law, Viola Garland Wragg, who loved her dearly. This work outside the home gave Mott an opportunity to share her warm spirit and wonderful personality with so many young boys and girls from the communities of West Attala County, MS.
Mott loved her church and her church family. She was a faithful member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and always did what she could to see that things were getting done. She served willingly as an Altar Lady until her illness. She was also a dutiful and dedicated worker with the children and youth training and Bible study on Wednesday nights. She also served her community as a member of the NAACP and a lifetime member of the NCNW.
The curtains closed on this beautiful life at her home in "Blackjack" on July 30, 2014 at 5:30 A.M. She is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel L. Garland Jr.; her parents, Dessie Ree Harrison, James Harrison and Emmitt McAfee; and her mother-in-law, Viola Garland-Wragg Jr.; father-in-law, Irving Wragg; and brother-in-law, Hiram Wragg
