Obituary For Robert Wendell Williams

Robert Wendell Williams was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on December 27, 1959. Robert succumbed to his illnesses on October 1, 2020 in Dallas, Texas.

Robert's early years as a youngster at Tipton Street Elementary School in Kosciusko, Mississippi indicated that he was talented at sports. "Joe Skunk" as he was affectionately known by his closets friends and teammates, displayed his talents all through high school and excelled on all the playing fields. Whether it was pitching and hitting home runs in Dixie League baseball, hitting game winning shots in basketball or winning numerous medals in track and field, Robert was a winner. But he especially thrived on the football field where he was a three-time, All-conference defensive back and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1977 Mississippi bowl. this was the first live televised high school football game in the state of Mississippi. That 1977 football team was undefeated (12-0) and was issued a proclamation honoring its greatness by the governor in 1978, which is still on display in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Robert's athletic exploits enabled him to earn a scholarship to the University of Mississippi "Ole Miss" in football, where unfortunately his career was cut short by injury.

Robert had a number of odd jobs, after Ole Miss, both in MS and in Cleveland, OH until he found his career job at Nucor from 1979 until he retired in 2009.

Robert was an active member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church even after he relocated to Dallas, Texas a few years ago. His faith was always on display to those many associates of his and those who were friends with him on Facebook. Robert's past times included his love of sports, especially his Raiders and Yankees, driving all over the country and good times and fellowship at family gatherings where his golden-brown catfish and frog legs were always a hit.

Robert was preceded in death by his father Charles Williams and by his first wife Vera Wilder. Robert's surviving relatives include his lovin mother Christine Williams (Kosciusko, Mississippi), brothers Charles "Buddy" Williams (Kosciusko, Mississippi), Johnie Williams (Corona, California) and Joe Joiner (Chicago, Illinois). Robert fathered two sons, Robert Latraun Huffman via Daryl Lynn Huffman (Weatherby) and Jeremy Williams via Vertrishe "Trish" Simmons. He also leaves behind a step-daughter Shaneka Patterson (Jackson, Mississippi), two grandchildren twins Kentraun and Keiarri Huffman (Kosciusko, Mississippi) a nephew Seth Fullilove (Charlotte, North Carolina) and a special friend Dannita Yates (Dallas, TX). A host of other cousins, uncles, aunts and friends are among a list to numerous to name but they are also grieving with us.

The family has been devastated and shocked by this unthinkable and untimely tragedy and the tears have flown freely and will continue to flow. However, from this day forward the family has committed to enjoying a celebration of Robert's life and a remembrance of all of the great times and joy that he provided to all who knew him.
