To the Guthrie family: I go back to 1957-61 classmates with John and Vallie. I always made it a point to sit next to Val in Dr. Pendagrast's General, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry classes. She was so brilliant and they remained true friends over the years. She will be missed.

I offer my sincerest condolences to the Guthrie Family. My prayer is that your faith and memories shall provide the strength and courage to withstand your loss, now and in the future. Dr. Guthrie shall always be remembered and valued for the unwavering, strong support and advocacy she gave me as Executive Director of the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network(NC-MSEN), upon my arrival and thereafter. Although we lost contact the last few years, my memories and appreciation for her as a person and professional are etched deeply. Her dedication to the professional development of K-12 science and mathematics teachers and the development (exposure and opportunities) of pre-college students, Grades 6-12, shall never be forgotten.
I met Dr. Guthrie at church ,and I went to a class that she taught. She was a joy to be around. She was so kind and friendly. When she came to church she looked Ike a fashionista. She was my former pastors sister. To the Willians family, Dr. Guthrie will truly be missed.

I will always remember Dr. Guthrie for her brilliance. She was over the GAMSEC program in which my two children attended. She was such a wonderful role model and teacher. She was so encouraging and was always concerned about my children's well being. Dr. Guthrie was just an all around good person and will always be appreciated for what she did to help all children in her midst. Rest in peace Dr. Guthrie and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Jennifer Rogers
To Rev. Guthrie, Micha, Micailah and the Guthrie family, we extend our deepest sympathy on the loss of Dr. Guthrie. I know your hearts are heavy. From what I am hearing about her during the lovely homegoing service, I know she will live on in your lives and in the lives of the many people she touched. What a beautiful legacy! -- Devarieste Curry and Yazmine
It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Dr. Guthrie. I had the privilege and honor to know her when I joined NCA&T. That was through the Greensboro Area Mathematics and Science Education Center (GAMSEC) program that she directed until her retirement. She was a true Aggie, a wonderful colleague, and a dedicated faculty. She truly devoted her professional life to serving NCA&T and the Department of Chemistry. But it is her commitment to working with young children and encouraging them to pursue STEM is that will be her enduring legacy. She touched and transformed the lives of so many students, some of them are now faculty at NCA&T. Please know that our prayers and thoughts are with you during these difficult times. My sincere condolences. I wish you strength and comfort at this sad time.
Abdellah Ahmidouch Dean, College of Science and Technology NCA&T

You are always in our prayers. Rev. Bernice Parker-Jones, Pastor, Faith Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC
To the family, As you already know, Dr. Vallie Guthrie has shared her radiance with everyone! I was able to experience this light during my years as a Chemistry major from 1991 thru 1997. As a freshman from a land far away (Denver, Colorado), Dr. Guthrie gave me the wisdom, guidance, and power to reach the stars to obtain the Master's. At the same time, she shared her love as a mother would do to help her adopted son. I didn't expect my life to change after meeting her but I still practice a lot of the techniques from GAMSEC and working in the office. The desire to stand behind a student and support the endeavors is most memorable. Also, the idea to be consistent, prompt, and hard working will always resonant with me no matter what is going on in life.
To the family again, thank you for sharing with us your ray of hope and light! I have been forever changed and you know that God has blessed you guys with a diamond in the rough that sparkled consistently.
Keep on staying the course as mentioned in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 ...
7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

To the family of Dr. Vallie Guthrie. I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Guthrie. I got to know her as the leader/instructor of science institutes I attended at NCA&T. I found her to be extremely knowledgeable, approachable, and professional. She had a genuine concern to make us even better teachers of science. We would occasionally see each other in Greensboro and stop and chat. She will be truly missed. Hazel Jones
