Obituary For Donald Layne

Donald Layne, 83, died Monday December 21, 2020.

Visitation 11-12 December 29, 2020 at Canaan Christian Church 2940 Hikes Lane. Private services. Burial Kentucky Veteran Cemetery, Radcliff, Kentucky.

Donald Layne was born March 22, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana, to proud parents, Houston and Amelia Layne.

Don was raised and educated in the Gallatin, Tennessee School System. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served his country for 20 years.

Being a faithful and active member at Christ Temple Church, Don was bestowed the honor of serving as the Armor Bearer to Bishop Moore. Later, Don continued his Christian Walk as a member of Canaan Christian Church. Don also had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of the singing group, the Spiritual Wonders. They recorded a CD and also had singing engagements across the state. His favorite Scripture was Jeremiah 17:7 But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.

Don’s civic duty in serving the community, manifest itself in his participation as a member of the Shriners.

The collection of model cars was a hobby for Don. If there was a new model car, on the market to buy, he would put it on his “most wanted” list to purchase. He loved and cherished his cars, and displayed his extensive collection, for others to enjoy. They were his pride and joy, his “untouchables”.

When Don’s interest was piqued in learning to play golf, he immediately bought new golf clubs and golf shoes, in preparation to learn all he could about his new found interest. He enthusiastically made plans to play golf, whenever the weather permitted.

Don was a Narcotics Detective for the Louisville Division of Police. His employment extended from November 10, 1975, until his retirement on April 4, 1997. After retiring from the Police Department, Don had no intentions of slowing down his pace.

In 2000, he came out of retirement to work for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, and retired from that Department in 2016.

Don’s accomplishments and service did not go unrecognized. He received the Mayor’s Citation Award, issued by the former Mayor Jerry E. Abramson; received the title of Gunnery Sergeant on October 1, 1978, from the U. S. Marine Corps for 20 years of Honorable and Faithful Active Service; and was also the recipient of numerous Training Awards.

On Monday, December 21, 2020, Don was called Home to be with his Heavenly Father. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Betty Dixon Layne; son, Donald Layne, Jr.; Daughter, Lisa Layne; Granddaughter, Sylise Hall; Grandson, James Holmes; Step Children, Renee Dixon, Quintin Marks, Tonya Marks, Jacquetia Marks; one Great Granddaughter, Faith Marks “Boo”, and several cousins, residing in Cincinnati. Ohio.

Donald Layne will be missed!
