Obituary For Leonard Ray Toogood

Leonard Ray Toogood, 59, of Louisville, transitioned on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at his home.

Visitation 10-12 Friday, January 26, 2024, at Star Hope Baptist Church 5009 E. Indian Trail. Funeral to follow at 12 noon. Burial Petersburg-Newburg Cemetery.

Leonard Ray Toogood was born on February 15, 1959, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the proud parents of John Henry Toogood and Mary Alice Whittaker Toogood. He was the sixth child of their ten children. The family moved from J-town and returned to Newburg in 1969, and with that being accomplished, 5301 Cedrus Circle was the stationary home where everyone in the neighborhood knew at least one or two of the children who lived there.

Ray- Ray, as he was known by those who “really” knew him, graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and enlisted in the United States Army. His tour of duty took him to Germany and other countries. He said it was a learning experience that would never be forgotten. When he was honorably discharged from the service, Leonard returned to Louisville and worked for Wohlleb's Bakery and Deli as a baker and also Horton Fruit Market until he retired.

As a youngster, Leonard learned how to fish with the help and encouragement from his father and brothers. His dad would gather up the boys and take them to his favorite fishing spot, and they would stay all day catching sometimes a little or a lot. Ray-Ray continued this tradition by taking his nieces and nephews fishing when they were old enough. His other hobbies included “Leonard with his camera” capturing pictures of family and friends at various stages of their lives. His family was his heart, and he showed it in so many ways. When needed, Leonard was there! He was a diehard U of L Cardinals fan who never missed a game. Although he never had any biological children, his dog “Diesel” was like a son to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Sadly, on Sunday, January 21, 2024, Leonard Ray Toogood departed this life surrounded by family at their family home. His legacy will live on in his siblings: Joyce (Corky), Henry, Kenneth, Michael, Dianna, Evelyn, David, William, Patricia, and Jonathan and a host of relatives, extended family, and friends.
