Obituary For Deacon Matthew J. Williams, Sr.

We announce with profound sadness the transition from mortal to immortal of Deacon Matthew J. Williams, Sr. Deacon Williams, 82, the widower of Queenie Hamilton Williams, departed this world on Thursday, January 7th in the Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro, SC. A native of Colleton County, SC, he was born August 12, 1938, to the parentage of the late Jacob Williams and Roxie Richards Williams. He attended the local public schools and resided his entire life in Colleton County.

He was a member of the Mt Nebo Baptist Church, Yemassee, SC. Ordained a deacon under the pastorate of Rev. Joseph Williams, Jr, he served on the Board of Deacons. He had previously served as the Church Treasurer. Deacon Williams also sang with the Male Chorus. He was faithful and dedicated in his christian service.

Deacon Williams was a member of Douglas Lodge, #277, Whitehall, SC.

"Match" as he was called by those who knew him best was known for his auto mechanic skills. He had been employed with Ford Motor Company and the Chevrolet Company in Walterboro for numerous years. He along with his late brother, Robert, established the R&M Mechanic Shop in Walterboro. He never gave up his willingness to use his skills. He was a kind and endearing father and grandfather, as well as, an affectionate caring brother and loved one. He was preceded in death by his wife, Queenie, son, Lester, his brother Robert Williams, Sr., sisters, Lougene Chisolm, Leola Williams, Maggie Brown.

Left to embrace his precious memory and celebrate his well-spent life, he leaves: his daughter, Magdalene (Thomas) Lawton, Walterboro, SC; his son, Matthew J. Williams, Jr., of Yemassee,SC; grandchildren, Alexis Lawton, Walterboro, SC, Christian Singleton, Walterboro, SC; great grandchildren, Christian, Jr.,Taylor, Abrianna, and Ayden; one brother, Jake (Pearl) Williams, two sisters, Julia (Nathan)Green, Mary (Deacon Amos) Riley, all of Yemassee, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

DUE TO THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC, ALL SERVICES WILL BE CONDUCTED WITH MASK AND SOCIAL DISTANCING ACCORDING TO THE CDC HEALTH GUIDELINES.

VISITATION: Sunday, January 10th, 4-7 pm in the Chapel of Young Funeral Home.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: Monday, January 11th, 11:00 am in the Mt. Nebo Cemetery, 22 Jonesville Ave., Yemassee, SC 29945.
