Sweet Georgia peach. A sweet songbird. And most of all, a sweet, sweet spirit, now resting in the arms of our Lord. Affectionately known as Mary Alice or Ms. Walton to many, to us she was simply Mama. As a mother and grandmother, she was second to none. The eldest daughter of Ella Beasley and John R Johnson Sr, Mary Alice attended E.R. Carter Elementary School. Upon graduating from Washington High School, Mary Alice Walton attended the historically black Morris Brown College majoring in Early Childhood Education. As a result of much dedication, to her studies, Mary Alice successfully utilized her BA degree to have a very rewarding career as an elementary school teacher with Atlanta Public Schools lasting 42 years until she retired in 1992. In addition to being an exceptional educator, Mary Alice was most fond of her affiliation with the Divine Nine sorority--Zeta Phi Beta, serving as an active member in good standing for all of her life. Mary Alice was known for her glorious soprano voice and one would marvel at the awesome power of God manifested in our mother's voice. Mary Alice Walton, joined Beulah Baptist Church while in elementary school, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. A.G. Davis. She has served is one of the most faithful and dedicated members of the church, making significant contributions to many of the church ministries which include the Trustee ministry, the courtesy ministry, the Beulah choral choir, the Platinum Club (Centennial building fund), the Atlanta stadium ministry and the Youth and adult Ceramic ministry. Our memories of Mama will live our hearts forever In Lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Morris Brown College, 643 ML King Jr Dr NW, Atlanta GA 30314. My deepest condolences to you and your entire family and all of the Beasley family
Our hearts grieve with you. Mrs. Mary Alice has been more than a sorority sister, more than a church and choir member and more than a friend. She has been a mentor and part of my chosen family. Although I won't be able to be with you, know that I want to be there. Oreather Bostick-Morgan and Rechard (Her Gabriel).
A woman with class, a woman with a zeal for the Lord, a woman that walked with her head high always even as time surpassed by through age, and lastly a radiant smile with a signature laugh that can never be forgotten. Out of all the years, I have never known to see Grandma Mary Alice smile to be a frown. Only when speaking to get clarification on something is when you didn't see a smile. She rarely allowed nothing to bother her; she took things lightly even when you would be the one panicking. She would always add a positive spin or an encouraging word on what was discussed. To have lived and served for as long as she did to the end; she is the epitome of what we have to strive to be. I will never forget the example she led by and I will cherish what she poured out forever in my heart. My condolences to the Walton/Beasley/Gloster family. My prayers are with you during this time and I wish I could be there also to help provide some comfort. I love you all! -Natasha Gloster
