Obituary For Elvin David Lang, Sr.

Mr. Elvin David Lang, Sr. passed unexpectedly on November 21, 2021. Elvin was born August 22, 1949 to the late Mr. Leon E. Lang, Sr. and Mrs. Jamie V. Hodges-Lang. Elvin was affectionately nicknamed "Pokey" by his father. He was the second of five sons. Elvin was always curious concerning life in general. If there was something to analyze, he was prepared to embark on it to find truth. After studying various religions, from a historical standpoint, he chose Jesus Christ as his personal savior and Lord. With his new found knowledge and understanding, Elvin later joined Old Ship AME Zion Church. He remained a faithful member until his demise. Elvin started his preparation for life's journey with his formal education as he matriculated through the Mobile County School System. After graduating from Williamson High School, Class of 1967, he furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelors and Master's Degree, in Biology, from Alabama State University. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1972 until 2003, of which twenty of those years were in the U.S. Army Reserves. For the state of Alabama, Elvin served as the Director of Environmental Training for E3 Solutions, Inc. (501c3-non-profit). He had extensive experience in conducting Environmental Justice Training to EPA employees, state agencies, local governments and citizens. He conducted the Fundamental of Environmental Justice Training Course in support of a Brownfield Environmental Workforce Development Job Training Program at Lawson State Community College. He served as assistant community engagement specialist for Brownfields projects for the cities of Prichard and Mobile, Alabama. He served as the assistant technical project manager for the City of Tuskegee's Brownfield Environmental Assessment Program. After 33 years, Elvin retired in 2009, as the Environmental Justice Coordinator for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). During his tenure at ADEM, Elvin served as an environmental scientist, Chief of the Source Sampling Unit and Chief of Emissions Measurement. He was responsible for programs which included; Visible Emission Certification Program, observing and evaluating emissions testing, reviewing test protocols, CEMS Audit Program, Leak Detection Audit Program, and performing emissions testing. He also enforced provisions of the 1990 Clean Air Act, conducted ambient air sampling for air toxics and served as the instructor for the Visible Emissions Certification Program. He also served as an Environmental Scientist in the Drinking Water Branch of ADEM where he inspected and wrote permits for non-community drinking water systems. He also provided assistance to water systems that were not in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Elvin has numerous years of experience inspecting recently constructed private water wells in rural communities. As a genealogist and historian, Elvin was the Vice-President of the Black Heritage Council of the Alabama Historical Commission, Vice-President and past president of the Black Belt African American Genealogical & Historical Society, Inc. and the Central Montgomery Optimist Club. He was also a member of many other civic and professional organizations, including the Alabama Conference of Black Mayors, Birmingham African American Genealogy Group, Mobile Genealogical Society, Clarke County Genealogical and Historical Society, Friends of Magnolia Cemetery, Alabama Historical Association, The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African American Culture at Alabama State University, Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance, the Alabama Bicentennial Park Advisory Committee (Name is located on the sidewalk), Freedom Rides Museum, Africatown Connections Blueway Planning Team, and Alabama Department of Archives & History and many other organizations. He also photographed several events and provided photos for the Equal Justice Initiative and the Alabama Institute for Social Justice. As if he had not done enough, he volunteered in the Archives Department at the Levi Watkins Learning Center at Alabama State University. He was an active member of the Williamson High School Alumni Association, the Alabama Asthma Coalition, additionally; he composed histories of those interred in various cemeteries in Alabama as well as other places. He had a passion for photography and was well known as an amateur photojournalist with a large array of photographs and other digital media. Elvin received many awards and personal recognition. His family and friends salute him for a job well done. He represented well, providing a rich legacy that will resonate in the hearts of many for years to come. Elvin lived life to its fullest. I am employed by EPA in Atlanta. I worked with Elvin for many years after he retired from ADEM teaching components of the EJ Fundamentals Course. Whenever I called, he would come. We were unable to compensate him for his time or travel, but he came at least 3 times a years for many years. He was always energetic and full of life when sharing a historical perspective of EJ. I enjoyed his visits and looked forward to seeing him on my visits to Montgomery. We have stopped teaching the class, so I hadn't communicated with him lately. I was in Montgomery last Christmas for just a day. It crossed my mind while I was there that I should have called him, but I thought I had time to catch up with him later. Who knew this would happen. He was such a nice person and he will be missed.

My sincere condolences to you Gering and your family. I am praying for all of you. Vickie D Jones AFHRA

There are no words to express how much we miss you Elvin. I know Heaven needed a very passionate photographer but I wish you'd been here with us longer. Your passion for all things history, preservation, archives and cemeteries is going to be such a void in our lives. Your positivity, professionalism and smile are left forever on our hearts! No one in the world is going to seek out Mosaic Templars in cemeteries like you. Rest well until we meet again! Dorothy Walker

I offer my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to this family. Elvin (Pokey) and I were neighbors. My back porch was facing his family's front porch, therefore we would talk through the screened in porches and he could always make me laugh out loud. The neighborhood boys claimed New Jersey street as their football field where they played as though they were professionals.Elvin, after graduating soon became known as "paparazzi", because he loved capturing photos and there was a story to ho along with the photo. In 2015 he honored me with a copy of "Alabama African American Heritage" that I shall treasure forever. He earned the title "Paparazzi", easily for he thrived on this. Pokey also thrived on being a gentleman. He would never allow a lady to open a door for herself or pull out a chair for herself. This is who he was and it spoke volumes. My prayers and condolences go out to this family with love and appreciation for sharing such a wonderful soul with us,and we pray God continue lifting you all up as only He can. To God be the Glory Pokey. Hear God as he welcomes you and say "Well Done my Faithful Servant. WELL DONE

Elvin captured a lifetime of memories, for us all, through his camera with a warm welcoming smile. He developed a legacy of fact finding & friendships that will never be forgotten. Sympathy & love to the family. Rest in heavenly peace.🎚️

Elvin was a wonderful human being, who loved his family and extended family members. He was our historian, who never missed a family reunion. Elvin will forever be in our hearts. Love, Patricia

My Friend, From time we first met in 2009 I knew our friendship would be something special. The conversation, the words the laughs and let's not forgot the road trips. All memorable and special. Thank you for sharing your life here with me. You will be missed.

And, to the family my Condolences.

My Classmate, Kenneth, and the Family, you will have sweet memories of Alvin. May the God of comfort belong to all of you.

My uncle, affectionately known as, Uncle Pokey will be missed. He was my closest connection to my late father and I cherished our relationship. The last thing my family and I did with him was to take his tour around Montgomery. It was one of the highlights of this summer and I am so grateful for that time and the experience.

Elvin Lang Sr has left a legacy of love and dedication to his family and our people. His work will live on in connecting us with the ancestors and the history of African Americans. He will be missed. I pray for the Lord to bless his soul as he joins the ancestors. Much love and respect... Bill and Pam Foster

Elvin will be missed as a contributor to the success of the Black Heritage Council. May his legacy live on!

The Mobile African American Genealogical and Historical Society send their prayers, sympathy and condolences to the Lang family. Elvin was a person who wanted everyone to know their family's history and genealogy. He will live forever in the hearts of those he met and helped in their genealogical quest to find their ancestors.

I will miss Elvin and his love of researching and his storytelling of his family's history and genealogy. His love of photography will forever rest in the many, many photos he has taken. He holds a special place in the hearts of all genealogists, historians and preservationists. My prayers, sympathy and condolences are with the family. REST IN PEACE ELVIN. Mary Jones-Fitts

James and Queen Daniels - Mobile, AL James Williamson High School Class of 1967

Elvin was such a good man. He was a lover of history and truly believed that everyone should know their history. He worked tirelessly around Alabama researching family histories. He was always willing to help you in your quest to trace your family's history. He was a childhood friend who got along with everyone in the neighborhood. We had just talked and I wanted to make sure he would be in Mobile in January to take pictures at the Dr. MLK Memorial Breakfast, as he has done for years. He always sent his classmates emails every week and the last email we received on November 19th ended with a song attached, "Blessed Assurance". He ended with his favorite saying, "Continue to uplift others in prayer, something we will do!

To my big brother I remember when we were little boys following momma around back in Mobile, all we had was each other.People admired how she raised 4 boys by herself. All of her boys grew to be good men,and you turned out to be one of those good men!!I was always proud of you and all that you accomplished in your lifetime.Love you and I am still proud! Get to heaven and join Momma and Bro,they will be glad to see you !

Elvin, I enjoyed working with you in the Black Heritage Council, the Optimist Club, Africa Town, and for over a decade at the ASU. Archives. You loved Mobile, ASU, and Black people. Thank you for what you brought to this state and to me personally. I will miss you!

My brother/cousin/friend, Elvin. You will be missed beyond measure, and I thank God that our paths crossed. I learned so much family history from you, and loved our shared passion for where we came from. We hurt today, but will always remember your kind spirit. My sincere condolences to the family and all who loved Elvin.

To Elvin: When I first met you in our San Antonio Unit, I don't think I'd ever met anyone like you at that point. You might have been my first up-close real hero. I knew nothing about the military and very little about life and you seemed to know everything about both. I thank you for coming to visit me when my health was compromised.

You had a great run and a great life achieving more probably than most of us. I'm back in school to close some doors I left open. Thank you for all you were.

To the Family: Please know that I share in your pain and sorrow and pay my final respects to one of the best friends and comrades a man could ask for. Elvin David will certainly be missed by all! Sincerely Lucious White (Uncle Ludy)
