Obituary For Carl Grant Bumpass

All too soon for family and friends, Carl Grant Bumpass departed this life at the Durham VA Medical Center on Friday, October 2, 2026, after an extended illness.

Carl was born in Roxboro, N.C. on February 18, 1951 to the late Cleo Danney Bumpass and the late Edith Melinda Barnett Bumpass. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Bumpass.

Carl was educated in Durham Public Schools and earned an Associate's Degree in Business. He served his country as a Jet Engine Mechanic in the US Navy during the Vietnam era. He spent his working life employed by three companies, GE, Honeywell and Eaton where many close lifelong relationships were formed.

Carl married Angeletta Malloy on June 5, 1982. From this union, two children were born – Justin Carlisle and Philip Adrian. He was a loving husband and a dedicated father to Derrick (Houze), Justin and Phil – supporting athletic and artistic interests.

Carl Bumpass was a man of many interests and talents…

“Bump” enjoyed playing pool and was a member of an area team and league for many years. Until a few weeks before his passing, he played casually every day. Fishing was a passion that he shared with family and friends - fishing coastal waters on beaches, piers (all day, all night, wind, rain), and deep sea from South Carolina to Massachusetts.

Wood working gave him great satisfaction. He made many pieces of outdoor furniture for family and friends.

Oh, we can not forget the Music. Carl enjoyed listening to and recording all kinds of music. Over the years, he amassed quite a collection of vinyl albums and other forms of recorded music – Smooth jazz was his favorite.

Youth basketball held a very special place in Carl’s heart. Along with Derrick, Carl coached elementary, junior high and high school teams in the city leagues and AAU. “Coach” was always mindful of the children ‘on the court’ and ‘off the court’, often providing assistance with fund raising, transportation, meals, uniforms, financial assistance, and always encouragement.

Carl enjoyed outdoor cooking – grilling, frying and smoking. Everyone loved his fried fish, turkey burgers, cedar plank salmon and cowboy soup. He took great pleasure in watching people enjoy what he prepared.

Carl is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Angeletta Malloy Bumpass; sons, Justin C. Bumpass, Philip A. Bumpass and Derrick Houze (Nikki); three beloved sisters, Janie Bumpass, Alice Faye Bumpass Jones and Jennifer Bumpass; sister-in-law, Brenda F. Bumpass. Carl held a very special place in his life for his granddaughters, Kyla Stone-Houze and Briana Stone-Houze. Nephew, Anthony Bumpass became a daily companion and co-caregiver– watching ball games, taking short excursions around town, providing a game of pool and another pair of eyes and hands as Carl’s health declined. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a wide circle of friends.

"In celebration of Coach Carl's love for the game and mentorship, support may be directed to his son Coach CeeDee's on going youth basketball initiatives to continue his impactful legacy on and off the court.
