Choo was more than our neighbor—he was our friend.

When my husband, Andre, and I completed our doctoral degrees, Choo proudly began calling us "Drs. Davis." It was such a simple gesture, but it meant so much because that was Choo—he celebrated the people he cared about.

One of the memories I will cherish most is the Puerto Rican dinner our friend Abe cooked for Choo at our home earlier this year. That evening was filled with everything that makes a memory worth holding onto—good food, great music, laughter, dancing, and, of course, Dominos. Choo, thank you for teaching me how to play. I may not have mastered the game, but I certainly enjoyed learning from you.

Before you left that evening, we danced to Barry White's "You're the First, the Last, My Everything." As you were leaving, you said, "Let's get together and dance again, Angie."

I remember that moment so clearly because it was the first time you ever called me Angie. My family calls me Angie. Somehow, hearing it from you that night made it feel even more special. I had no idea then how much I would treasure those words.

Choo, you ran your race, my friend. You lived, you laughed, you loved, you traveled, you played your music, and you brought people together. Your presence will be missed, but the memories you gave us will remain.

Know that Andre and I will continue to look out for Vickey, Trina, and Anthony. That's what neighbors do. That's what friends do. That's what family does.

And as for that dance you asked for—we'll just have to save it for another time.
