Mr. Donald Wayne Amos, affectionately known as Gouch or Goucho, was born on February 16, 1953 in Durham, NC. He transitioned to his heavenly home at his earthly home of residence on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Donald was also called Pluchie by some family and friends. Donald was the only son of Mrs. Marzella Amos Gulley and the late Mr. Eddie Gulley.
Donald was a lifelong resident of Durham, North Carolina where he was educated by the Durham Public School System. Mr. Amos was an alumnus of Durham High School, class of 1971. Donald met his high school sweetheart Lucinda Cozart and from that relationship, birthed his only child Donald Cozart-Amos. After high school, he moved to New York and later returned to Durham and entered the workforce as a manager of the lumber shipping department for the West Durham Lumber Yard and later worked several years in the same position for Coalman Lumber Company. After that, he worked several years for and retired from Durham Public Schools as a custodian at Brogden Middle School.
Donald loved playing baseball and softball. He was recruited by UNC while in high school, which grew his love for the school. After high school he played fast-pitch softball for several years for, B&G Grill, Cool’s Gang, and the Speed Boys softball teams. He was a very versatile player, able to play multiple positions (all outfield, catcher, and all infield positions). Donald specialized and was an exceptional second base and shortstop player.
Donald was a member of the Church of God In Christ Jesus New Deal Incorporated.
He enjoyed spending time with his family (especially his grandchildren). His grandkids affectionately called him PaPa. Donald loved watching football, basketball, racing, golf, and all sports and was an avid UNC Tarheel fan and supported them in all sports.
Mr. Donald W. Amos was preceded in death by his stepfather, Eddie Gulley; wife Ruth Amos. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his beautiful and devoted mother Marzella Gulley of Durham, NC, dedicated and loving son, Donald Maurice Cozart-Amos Sr (Adelia) of Hughesville, MD; stepson Sylvester Lee Best, granddaughter Layla A. Cozart-Amos, grandsons Donald M. Cozart-Amos Jr and David E. Cozart-Amos all of Hughesville, MD, loving special cousins, Tonetta Amos, Rebecca “Ann” Waller, Katina Hargraves, Rudy Hargraves, of Durham, and a host of loving cousins, family, and friends.
Sleep on Pop; we will see each other again. We will always love you, but we know God loves you best.

Funeral service will be held at The Church of God In Christ Jesus New Deal Incorporated, 815 Fargo St., Durham, NC on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, visitation service from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, funeral service starts at 1:00 pm.

My friend for many years. We grew in the bottom together. Gaucho was one heck of baseball catcher. We won championships together for WD Hill and The Boys Club.
