Lillie Mae Timberlake Burt
She was born on May 1, 1930, to Emanuel and Helen (Bullock) Timberlake. She entered eternal rest peacefully on June 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at home.
She lived a life rooted in faith, family, and unwavering strength. Though she built a loving home in Durham County, her roots ran deep in Granville County. She was educated at G.C. Hawley School and was a devoted member of Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Butner, NC. It was her spiritual home, where she lived for her purpose. Her faith was her foundation. Every Sunday, she made sure each family member was up early to read scripture, with someone chosen to lead prayer.
She was the kind of woman who'd give you her last dollar or the shirt off her back. Her heart knew no limits. She had a remarkable memory: recalling every birthday and phone number without writing them down. Each year, you could count on a joyful birthday song from "Mama" or "Aunt Mae." That deep attention and love defined her.
She was known far and wide for her cooking, the heart of every gathering. You never left hungry and always remembered what you ate. Her sweet potato cobbler and signature pies: chocolate, coconut, and egg custard, were legendary. Her biscuits and soul food were unmatched. Every meal was made with love and served with a story or a smile.
A 54-year breast cancer survivor, she was a fierce advocate for the cause. Lillie Mae lived with resilience and grace. Her strength inspired everyone who knew her, and her love stretched across generations and communities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Lee Burt Sr.; daughter, Veronica Faye Burt McKinley; grandson, Erik Jamar Burt; and her 7 siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Ralph Burt Jr. (Mary) and Victor Burt, both of Durham, NC; five daughters, Cynthia Charles of Charlotte, NC, Awanya Davis (Barry) of Durham, NC, Stephanie Evans of Durham, NC, Paula Miller (Roger) of Jacksonville, FL, and Tracey Burt of Durham, NC; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom carry her memory, strength, and values. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Ruth Tanner and Lillian Burt, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lillie Mae embodied Proverbs 31:25β31: clothed in strength and dignity, she spoke with wisdom, watched over her household with care, and lived a life worthy of praise, a woman who truly feared the Lord and whose works speak for her even now.

To the Burt family, you have my deepest condolences. As a child in North Durham on Elizabeth Street the Burt's, Mayhue's and the Strudwick's were family. Mrs. Lillie Mae was one of the sweetest mother you'd ever want to meet, she always comforted me when I came home from school and my family wasn't home yet, she'd have me come over and hang out with her until my older siblings got home, she was a awesome nurturer that's what I will always remember about Mrs. Burt. Now it's your time to rest and I pray ππ½ your rest is as sweet as you were. Burt family I love you! ππ«Άπ½π
My prayers are with the family during this difficult time. Mrs Burt was one of the sweetest person I have ever known. I never saw her when she didn't have that BEAUTIFUL smile on her face. May GOD bless each and every family member.
Grandma, you will truly be missed! I am at peace knowing that you are healed & without any pain or suffering, however, I am going to miss you dearly. I truly appreciate the time that we spent together cooking, eating, watching "Cold Case", listening to your favorite gospel songs & dancing. We have a big family, but you always made time for others & ensured that everyone felt loved, was well fed, and healthy. The love, time, attention, patience, and positive outlook you displayed was one that few carried. I am so thankful that you were able to meet my children & form a bond with them, but I didn't think that our time would be cut so short. It is selfish of me to want you back & to hear your voice one last time, so I will "try my best" not to cry too much, because I know that you would want me to be happy & rejoice on your achievement of living a 95 year, God fearing, sanctified life as a mother of many, a wife, nurse, cook, speech teacher, and my personal preacher. So grandma, this is not goodbye, but see you later. XOXO
Love,
Adjee
I've known & loved Ms Lillie Mae all of my life. She is family and treated me as such. So many precious memories of our years living next to each other. I rejoiced in her presence up until I last saw her ( which I've grateful for). She's absent from that body that no longer served her, but she's present with her Lord & Savior. In that, REJOICE!! My deepest condolences and love to the beautiful family that I so deeply love.
