Lou Davis Barnes, 97, departed this life on Friday, December 13, 2019.
Funeral service will be on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville St, Durham, NC 27707, at 12:00 noon, visitation service from 11:00 am to 12:00.
I was a student at NCCU during Ms. Barnes' tenure. She was so helpful to me, a young poor student from a small town. When I married, she helped me by providing childcare so that I could attend class. She was dearly loved by me, Shirley Peppers Merritt-Kittrell. Condolences to the family and may Jehovah offer you comfort.
Thank you for your warmth and service to NCCU! Continue to soar! Sending thoughts and prayers to the Barnes' family.

My condolences to the Family. I admired, loved and respected Ms Barnes from Day One at North Carolina Central University. She showed me how to be strong and caring at the same time, and always with a smile. God is Good All the Time.

Cousin Lou has always held a very special place in my heart. As a little girl, I saw in Cousin Lou the type woman that I wanted to become. She modeled a wonderful mother, wife, community leader and family member. Memories of visiting her at NCCs Student Union when my mother was in grad school there, to simply visiting her at home or at family gatherings. Memories of Cousin Lou will forever be etched in my memory!

The strength of NCCU and the community MOTHERHOOD. Misbehave in that student union and Mrs. Barnes would catch you every time, always encouraging us to "go to class". VERY FOND MEMORIES

I worked with Lou many years at NCCU and she would always pick up my spirits whenever we would meet on campus. Lou loved the students and they loved her, as a mother figure. She was an asset to the NCCU administration, faculty, staff and students. Also, Lou always dressed to impress everyday! You will be missed in the Durham community! Shirley Bass Ragland
