I have pleasant memories of Martha Flowers. We attended Manhattan School of Music in New York City - I was working on my undergraduate degree, Ms. Flowers was completing her graduate degree. We often sat together in class and shared many lunches in our very cozy cafeteria at the school. We shared a mutual friend, Elma Adams, pianist extraordinaire. I recall she was very excited to know that I knew Mrs. Adams because she counted her as her very dear friend. Ms. Flowers moved to the South to begin a teaching assignment and so we never saw each other again, but we often exchanged pleasantries via Mrs. Adams with whom she kept in touch. I am enjoying her playlist and still marveling at the beauty of her voice and the wide range of the various genres that she sang. I was privileged to have met Martha Flowers. May she Rest In Peace and Rise in Glory. Grace Hackett, Ph.D.
I am so sad about Mother Flowers transition! We had so many beautiful conversations. I was her Akea girl for more than ten years and we both wanted to live long and strong for at least 100 years. She would call about once a month and say... "Beverly! I need my Akea!" and let out that sweet laugh. I would drive over, pick up her mail and take everything in. We both were so excited to share how great we felt from taking the daily essentials. I will miss my friend... always so vibrant! Until we meet again. Beverly Harris
I thank God for our paths to cross ( Martha & me ) she was indeed a loving person & a good friend . I will truly miss her & the good times we shared.
I am reflecting with much gratitude on the life of Martha Flowers, one of my UNC professors and a dear friend. I accompanied in her music studio as a dental student at UNC, having taken her "Music of Afro-Americans"p course as an undergraduate.
Martha was a music trailblazer, world famous soprano, and UNC's first African American professor in the music department. I had the great honor to serve as accompanist for her private voice studio while I was a dental student.
Martha Flowers will be missed. I count it a major blessing to have known and learned from this lovely and talented musical trailblazer with a huge heart. She was a great performer, generous teacher and dear friend. There will certainly be many other tributes to Miss Flowers in the future. Meanwhile, please listen to her performances on YouTube, including one found at this link: https://youtu.be/uyxZrMfMHG4

I met Mother Flowers @ Faith Assembly Christian Church, and got to know her for her beautiful smile and ( always) her kind words of wisdom to the congregation. Sometimes she would say live life to your fullest! One thing I loved about her she loved to dress and she always made you feel welcomed in her presence. Rest in peace Mother Mary Flowers.
Greetings, It is common knowledge that I love Professor Martha Flowers and she loves me back. (Notice the tense of this sentence) For more than forty years of my life, Martha shared her gifts, her wisdom and her LOVE with me. These same gifts shaped the musical securities I acquired in performance, and affect my total being, even today.
She was good to me !!!!!
For those of us who really, really knew her, our lives will never be the same without her.
