Obituary For Mattie Ann Suggs McDuffie
Mattie Ann Suggs McDuffie was born on January 27, 1950, to the late Nathaniel Suggs and Mazie Beatrice Hannah Suggs. On Friday, December 19, surrounded by her loving family, Mattie peacefully departed this earthly life at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
A lifelong resident of Durham, Mattie received her education in the Durham Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Hillside High School. Shortly after graduation, she began a dedicated career with Duke University Medical Center in Patient Services. Mattie faithfully served for 21 rewarding years before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and compassion.
Mattie was member of Ambassador Cathedral Church in Durham, North Carolina, under the leadership of Pastor Benjamin Morris Jr., where she found spiritual strength and fellowship.
Family was the center of Mattie’s life. She had a deep and abiding love for her nieces, nephews, cousins, and especially the children in her life.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents, Nathaniel Suggs and Mazie Beatrice Hannah Suggs; her sisters, Margie Weathers and Gloria Devine Suggs Jiggetts; and her brother, Jimmy Suggs.
Though she will be deeply missed, Mattie leaves behind cherished memories and a lasting legacy of love in the hearts of her family. She is survived by her five beloved children whom she raised and loved dearly:
Juanita Faye Rogers (the late Rodney Rogers), Lolita Kaye Deberry (Craig), Mekeba McDuffie Brigman (Dashiel), Raheim Gatling, and Omar Mason, her only living sibling Teresa Suggs Bass (Curtis).
She also leaves to cherish her memory five grandchildren:
Devonte Ray Rogers (Imani), Kayla Maurisa Deberry, Jaylyne Brigman, Craig “CJ” Deberry Jr., and Aidan Brigman; two great-grandchildren; Bryson Ray Rogers and Noemie Deberry; a special friend and sister at heart, Michelle Noel; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Mattie truly lived her life on her own terms, and she will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
