Rodney Lydell Leathers, 66, departed this life on Wednesday, August 19, 2020. Rodney Lydell Leathers was born on June 27, 1954 at Lincoln Hospital in Durham, NC to Clarence Leathers, Jr. and Jennie Mae Leathers Lomax. He passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 19, 2020. Rodney is preceded in death by his loving parents, Clarence Leathers, Jr. and Jennie Mae Leathers Lomax, and his sister, Patricia Holder. Rodney attended Durham Public Schools and graduated from Hillside High School in 1973. After graduation from high school, Rodney served in the United States Army from 1974 until 1979 when he received an Honorable Discharge. Rodney then went on to receive an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Rutledge College in 1979. Rodney worked at Duke University for over 14 years and retired in 2013. He received the Employee of the Month award at Duke in 2008. His true professional craft was construction; he had over 40 years of experience in Drywall installation and repair. Rodney was "something else", both compassionate and feisty at the same time. He loved music, and one of his all-time favorite artists was Prince. He also enjoyed fishing, grilling, and talking plenty of junk! Rodney loved to be surrounded by his family and friends. His daily routine in retirement included visiting his brothers, hanging out and riding around with his best friends (especially in his new Benz), and grabbing food for Aunt Ruth whom he had been caring for over the recent years. And one would be remiss if they did not mention Rodney's love for his favorite girl "Mary Jane"! He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Those left to cherish his memory include his lifelong companion and former spouse, Pamela Leathers, his children, Chiquetta Harris Leathers (mother - Sandra Leathers) and Derek Leathers (Kim) (mother - Pamela Leathers), grandchildren Miles Leathers, Elijah Leathers, Karter Leathers, and bonus grandchildren Rodney Malone and Jessica Jones. His siblings, Delores Curry (Nathan), Sandra Tate (Victor), Sharon Leathers, Belinda Holloway, Aaronda Leathers, Emory Leathers, Melvin Leathers, Clarence Leathers, III (Ruby), Victor Leathers, Darrell Leathers (Janet), and Otis Holder (Marcella). His aunts and uncles who he shared a special bond with: Ruth Lilly, Sheila McNeil, Thelma Johnson (Ben), Patricia Green, Carolyn Leathers, and Earl Leathers and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. The Wake service for Rodney will take place at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, August 28, 2020, from 4:00-6:00 pm. Due to COVID, the Wake is a walk through only and face mask is required.
