Roosevelt Burt, a man whose life was a testament to hard work, warm spirit, and quiet strength, passed away on March 17, 2026.
Born in Wake County, North Carolina,
Roosevelt was the kind of man who never needed much fanfare. For years, he operated his own dump truck business, rising early and putting in the effort that self-made men know well. That same dependable work ethic led him to a long career at Duke University, where he served faithfully as a campus transit driver. To the students, faculty, and staff who rode with him, he was more than a driver — he was a familiar, friendly face that made the campus feel a little more like home. Those who knew Roosevelt remember him as genuinely warm, quick with a kind word, and the sort of person whose presence made a room feel easier. In his leisure, he enjoyed the simple, satisfying pleasures that defined his generation — good company, the outdoors, and the unhurried rhythms of a life lived on his own terms.
Roosevelt was married to Mary Burt for 52 years, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted nephew, Donald 'Pete' Burt of Bunnlevel, North Carolina, along with a host of cherished family and friends who will carry his memory forward with love.
Roosevelt Burt lived over nine decades with his hands busy and his heart open. That is a life worth celebrating!
