Reflections of Life
Shelton Leon Barrett was born on June 20, 1948, in Durham, North Carolina, to the late Ernestine Barrett Tilley and William Lennon.
He attended Durham Public Schools and was part of the Hillside High School class of 1966 and later graduated from North Carolina Central University with his Bachelor of Science degree. He was one of the first African Americans to be admitted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.
Throughout his life, Shelton followed several meaningful pursuits. In the late 1990s, he served as a Certified Nursing Assistant, providing care and compassion to all entrusted to him. He later continued his professional growth at Harris Barber College in Raleigh, NC. Shelton devoted many years to the moving industry, where he became known for his professionalism, warm demeanor, and the numerous customers he assisted—especially during the cherished years he worked alongside his son.
In 1968, Shelton married Mildred Whitley, and to their union were born one daughter, Kimberly Barrett Robinson, and two sons, Shelton Barrett, Jr. (1978) and Shaun Christopher Barrett.
Shelton departed this life on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 9:40 AM at Pruitt Carolina Point. He will be lovingly remembered for his generous heart, quick wit, and unwavering willingness to help those in need. He enjoyed being a sharp dresser, smelling good, watching the History Channel, and sharing laughter with his children. His kind, light-hearted spirit and warm presence will be greatly missed.
He leaves to cherish his memory his former wife, Mildred Waddell of Durham, NC; his children—daughters Kimberly Robinson (Cedric) of Frisco, Texas; Candace Williams of Durham, NC; Nikki King of Durham, NC; and one son, Shaun Christopher Barrett (Bianca) of Chapel Hill, NC; his grandchildren: Kyla Williams, Corey Robinson, Courtney Robinson, Whitley Barrett, Dhalia Eubanks, Dante Williams, Brittany Williams, Milani Thomas, and Nigel King; his longtime companion, Tuwanna Lee; bonus daughter, Dora Lanier; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Shelton and I were classmates at hillside high class of 1966 my condolences to you and the family
My cousin Shelton, many words and conversations come to memory. Shelton and I could converse for hours. We would inform each other of issues, family happenings, world politics, religion, failures, accomplishments... One must consider that Shelton and I were Dock Lennon's grandsons... Uncle William Lennon, Shelton's dad... my great uncle... both looked like Uncle William, and proud of it !!! Shelton loved his family.... and my life was/is richer because of his love, concern, and influence upon me. He always, always, would say: " Cousin Al... do like I say... not what I've done.... always!!! " I am grieved deeply by his departure from among us. I will miss him for a long time to come. Much love my cousin... see you later!!! Rest well Shelton... Rest well!! Your cuz Al!!!
Sincere condolences to the Barrett family. Love and compassion ❤️ 💕 💜
