On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, God dispatched an angel to the bedside of Brenda Joy Elaine Gaston and whispered, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. At that moment, Brenda smiled and took her flight.

Brenda, affectionately known as “Joyce,” was born to the late Henry and Annie (Washington) Carey on June 8, 1943, in Westmoreland County, Nomini Grove, VA. She attended Piney Grove School in Richmond County during her childhood. After relocation to Newark, NJ, she furthered her education at Madison Junior High and Weequahic High School in Newark, NJ. Joyce went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Bloomfield College.

Joyce married Wardell Gaston on New Years Eve, December 31, 1963. United in love, they welcomed their beloved baby girl Karen Gretchen Gaston.

Following her employment with Drakes Bakery, in 1970, Joyce started working for the Newark Board of Education, where she dedicated 44 years of service, until her retirement in 2014.

Joyce enjoyed traveling, sewing, spending time with her family, and hosting barbecues serving her coleslaw and seafood salad. Joyce loved God, and for many years was a devoted member of Saint James AME Church, Newark, NJ, where she served on several auxiliaries.
