Melvin “Sonny” Arnet Hayes, Jr., 81, departed this life peaceably on Friday at Windsor Gardens Nursing Home, East Orange.
He was born in Newark, NJ to Melvin A., Sr. and Mary E. Hayes.
He was predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Mary E. Hayes, one sister, Loretta Smith, two brothers, Milton and Ismael Hayes. Survivors include one daughter, Renee Hayes, of NJ, four sons, Deric Glen, Sr., of Washington State, Mark, of NJ, Mahia Hayes, of PA, and Aaron Floyd, of NJ; nine grandchildren, Brandon, Ashley, Deric Jr. (DJ), Cody, Tomesha Johnson, Marnae Hayes, Jamill Hayes, Elijah Johnson, and Aliyah Hayes; five great-grands, Simone, Lamyia, Cha Nyah, Julian, and Ashtyn; five sisters, Margaret Covington, Cora Patricia Thompson, Melvinia Ophelia Garner, Ruth Yvonne (Cookie) McQueen, and Deborah Vanessa Williams. One uncle, George Harding, and a host of relatives and friends.
