Dwight Rice, Jr. was born on July 9, 1971 to Gwendolyn Clowney Rice and Dwight (Delores) Rice, Sr. He was the husband of Sonya Rice. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, mentor, businessman, and community leader.
He was known for his ability to inspire others. Dwight was an encourager by nature, always finding the right words to lift someone's spirits, restore confidence, and remind people of their worth. To many young people, he was more than a mentorβhe was a guiding light who invested his time, wisdom, and energy into helping them believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.
He was the successful business owner of Makeaway Sales and Towing. Dwight built more than a company; he built relationships. He treated customers like family, employees like partners, and every challenge as an opportunity to grow.
Those who knew Dwight will remember his infectious laughter and quick wit. He had a gift for making people smile and could turn an ordinary gathering into an unforgettable occasion. Whether sharing a joke, telling a story, or simply lighting up a room with his presence, he was truly the life of the party. His joy was contagious, and his ability to bring people together was one of his greatest gifts.
Left to cherish fond and loving memories are: his children, Raven Rice, Justin Rice, Kiana Rice, Tyler Washington and Tyvon Green; thirteen grandchildren; his sister, Rashida Davidson (Derrick); his nephew, Derrick Jr.; his five stepchildren, Kinitra, Lirica, Marvelous and Whitney Makupson, and Rickey (Nicole) Burnside, III; eighteen step grandchildren; paternal grandmother, Carolyn Dawkins; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Evelyn Cole Clowney and John Clowney, Jr; and his paternal grandfather, Ralph Moore.
Though his physical presence will be greatly missed, his spirit, laughter, wisdom, and unwavering belief in others will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, generosity, and joy that will never be forgotten.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 12:00 noon at New Life Deliverance Worship Center. Burial will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens.

To the Rice family, you have my deepest sympathy! I send love, light, and prayers to you all. I just recently found out Dwight was related to me through the Clowney side of family and was waiting to have that family tree talk as we all do. I'm grateful for the encouragement and insight he always gave to myself and others. I appreciate the times he talked me out of trouble rather than handling things my way. A true mentor and friend! You will never be forgotten! Rest In God!

To say that I was shocked and heartbroken to learn of Dwight's passing is an understatement. We had just been in contact a few days earlier. I was Dwight's 3rd grade teacher and getting to know him all over again was one of the biggest blessings of my life. I would've known him anywhere even after all these years, because he still looked like 3rd grade Dwight. To his family, please accept my deepest condolences. He is very much missed. Cindy OQuinn
