Charlie Carpenter Jr. ,82, of Havelock, passed Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
A Celebration of Life Service is 1:00 PM, Friday, December 27, 2025 at Piney Grove AMEZ Church.
In 1971, Charlie made history as Havelock's first African American police officer, breaking barriers and serving his community with dedication. Later, he transitioned to work as a longshoreman, where he continued to take immense pride in his hard work, his contributions to his family and his commitment to the betterment of his community."
He is survived by his wife, Laura Richard Carpenter of the home; son, Charlie Ness Carpenter (Pam); two grandsons, Maurice Dwayne Carpenter and Cameron Bryce Carpenter; a host of nieces and nephews who thought of him fondly, including Florita Bell Griffin (Richard).
