Obituary For Marie Sue Senzig

Captain Marie Sue Senzig, 66, of New Bern died Wednesday October 16, 2024 at SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House Newport, NC.

A memorial gathering and Rosary
will be held at Oscar’s Mortuary New Bern on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 3:00 PM, followed by military honors.

Marie was born in Baraboo, WI and raised in the small town of Lyndon Station. As 1 of 13 children, she grew up accustomed to hard work, as in weeding the garden which was the size of a football field.

She went to Viterbo College for nursing and then entered the military as an officer with a 28-year career as a navy nurse, achieving the rank of captain. From early in her life, she knew she wanted to follow the path of service. She started playing taps at the age of 12 for the local VFW Post 5970 for military funerals. Her family was her first love, but cruising was a close second. She was blessed to spend many long cruises at sea. She had the privilege with her sister Marcy of providing end-of-life care for her mother. In her military years, she lived in unusual places such as Sardinia, Guam and Iceland and many different cities from coast to coast. She ended up in New Bern, NC where she resided over the last 20 years. She had a wonderful circle of friends in New Bern, as well as retired military friends and lifelong cruising buddies.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the American Legion, the Navy League and the Military Officers Association of America where she was president of the local chapter for 6 years. While president of this chapter, she organized numerous Christmas boxes and mailed out Christmas cards and essential Christmas items for vets.

Marie enjoyed cards, Mahjong, crocheting and needlework with many personalized needlework projects and baby afghans for new family arrivals over the years. She was a member of St. Mary’s (Lyndon Station) and St. Paul’s Catholic Church (New Bern). She will miss her wonderful neighbors and church family.

She is survived by ten brothers and sisters; Francis, Jerome (Deanna), Tom (Teri), Marcy Krogh (Don), Randy (JoAnn), Rodney, Darcy Hover (Bruce), James (Becky), Mary Morris (Gene), and Raymond (Michelle), 18 nieces and nephews, 2 step nephews, and 13 great nieces and nephews. Marie’s nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews were the joy of her life.

A wake and Catholic Mass will be at St. Mary’s Parish and burial in the family plot in Lyndon Station, WI on Dec 3, 2024.

In lieu of flowers and cards and honoring Marie’s philanthropic spirit, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society or a cause dear to your heart.

It was a pleasure to be introduced to Marie through my sister in law who served with Marie in the Navy Nurse Corp. Marie was a sweet, caring and beautiful woman. I looked forward to her visit with our family at the beach and enjoyed our many conversations. Marie rest in peace my friend and always know you will hold a special place in my heart and on my Warrior list. Debbie Songer

Senzig family and Marie's many friends who became extended family. I served with Marie on Guam. She was a gracious officer, leading by example with a grace yet firm style important to good order and discipline. Her friendship was a true gift. She assisted in after hours care for my young son when I had evening clinic and nursing duties. She taught him monopoly, fixed his dinners when needed and endeared herself to him as one of his aunties! Her kindnesses were many. She reviewed lots of military writings for nurses, docs and MSC officers alike. Sharing her knowledge and gifts in teaching and molding young officers. She will be missed by so many. God has called her home that her spirit might become a light and inspiration in the lives of all who knew her. Rest easy now Marie. You will always be lovingly remembered. Cathy(Turner) Carter, CDR, NC Retired.

There are those who come into your life for but a moment and leave a big mark on your heart. That was Marie for me.

We met at our first American Legion Post 539 - NC meeting where we were introduced and asked to say a few words. Bill and I talked of our backgrounds and our shared mission with Paws of War Eastern North Carolina. Afterwards, Marie came over, introduced herself and wanted to know more about our mission. She wanted to help. And boy did she help in so many ways.

Marie was easy to talk to and I really enjoyed our conversations. Our last one was a FaceTime video. I called to check in with her. She looked so happy and was full of joy. She was heading to her Coastal Carolina MOAA meeting. And wanted to know everything we were doing with our program so she could share it.

I miss hearing your voice and seeing your smile. Thank you for being a good friend to me, to our program and to so many. You are a true American Hero. Blessings and prayers to her family and all those lives she touched. ❤️‍🩹🙏🇺🇸

I am so sorry to hear of Marie's passing. I had the honor of serving with her overseas at Naval Hospital Guam. She was an exceptional leader, always there to support her staff and the patients that we cared for. Heaven has gained another angel. May she rest in peace. My condolences to her family.

I have been friends with Marie for over 43 years and met her at St. Mark's Parish in Northern Virginia. I was in charge of scheduling and training new lectors, and Marie was one of the best of the group. She loved crocheting, cooking, her family, many cruises, photography, her military career in the Navy, working puzzles, and reading novels. She was very kind-hearted, intelligent, and true to her friends and commitments. She never missed a birthday, anniversary, or Christmas. We kept in touch wherever she was stationed throughout the years and enjoyed meeting up when she passed through the D.C. area. Since April of 2023 Marie and I texted quite frequently, and she kept me apprised of her treatment and progress, always with a positive attitude and a great appreciation for her family and friends who were always faithful to her as she was faithful to them throughout her life. So faithful was Marie that when my last two emails weren't answered, I knew it was time to look for her obituary. Oh, true and faithful friend, I will miss you so very much, as will all of us. Rest in eternal peace, Marie. -Clenise White, Richmond, VA

Dear Senzig Family, I am deeply sorry for the loss of your sister Marie, your sister in law, aunt, great aunt, and cousin, she will be greatly missed by all. However, she has also left a void in her Navy Family's heart as well. I had the pleasure of working with Marie while she was at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital and I at Navy Health Clinic Cherry Point. She was an amazing example of dedication, professionalism, and integrity. I could always count on her when I needed assistance. Like Marie, we both had large families and she often spoke of her love for her family; so when she met my family we all became one Happy Family. She Loved cruising and sharing her adventures; of course once she invited me along I was hooked! It was a pleasure to work with Marie and a true honor and privilege to call her my friend. Fair winds and following seas my dearest friend and Shipmate! Miss you.

I got the lovely opportunity to clean for Marie after she got diagnosed. She became a wonderful inspiration, a joy to be around, and an amazing friend. She's created so many amazing stories for me to share with my friends and family. Her spirit will always remain a part of my heart ❤️ - Kay

My husband and I met .arie on a 35 day cruise to Iceland. With sea days ahead we wanted to learn how to play Mahjong. This was not an easy game to learn and most people did not want to play with you if you did not already know how to play. We were about to give up trying to learn to play until we met Marie. She was so helpful and generous with her time and played with us through our beginner mistakes over and over again until we learned to play. We met up serval days a week through the cruise and when the cruise was over we were able to continue to meet up for Mahjong as we lived fairly close. Only about 2 hours away from each other. After Marie was diagnosed we were able to spend last Christmas with her as she was not able to travel and we were on our way to Florida. We continued to meet up for Mahjong until late summer and we're able to have one last back porch visit with her a few weeks before her passing. We are so blessed to have the opportunity to develop a friendship with such an amazing person. She will be greatly missed we will keep her family and friends in our prayers during this sorrowful time🙏

Marie has made a difference in so many lives! She touch so many in the Navy and here in New Bern as the past President of the Coastal Carolina Chapter, Military Officers Association of America. Her shinning personality will live in our hearts.

Rest in Heavenly Peace Joan Fisher Sidberry j67r6

Though I had not seen my cousin Marie for a good number of years, I remember her as being kind and very good to us. As kids, Marie was our baby-sitter when Dad (Edward Rogge) Mom(Bonnie)occasionally went out. Later, Marie was stationed at Whitney Island, where we re-acquainted; however, we were much older. At that time, my sister Sheila(now deceased), was struggling with raising 2 kids and a struggling marriage. Marie was very kind and made special time to visit and encourage her. I am sure that they are now reunited and catching up-free of pain and worldly worries. Rest dear cousin and give Sheila a hug.

I had the pleasure of working closely with Marie at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital during my XO tour. She was an amazing example of dedication and professionalism. I could always count on her assistance. She often spoke of her love for her family and of course, cruising. It was a pleasure to work with Marie and an honor to call her my friend. Mary and I are so very sorry for you loss. Marie became a dear friend through MOAA and the American Legion but most especially through our Sunday afternoon gathering at Harris Teeter for a few adult beverages.

Captain Trish Miller, U, S, Navy (Retired)

Senzig Family, Marie was one of my closest friends and like a sister to me. We met when she was stationed at Naval Hospital Bremerton, WA and I was at Naval Station Everett. I can honestly say that Marie has never met a stranger and she immediately made you feel like family. She always talked of her 7 brothers (Francis, Jerome, Rodney, Randy, Tom, Jim and Ray) and her 5 sisters (Karen, Julie, Marcy, Darcy and Mary) with love and admiration. She was hoping to start booking long cruises again after your Mom passed away but it seems that God had other plans for her. Marie has taken on the new role as Guardian Angel to her family and friends. Rest easy good and faithful servant. Fair Winds and Following Seas my friend. Stand relieved now Marie. We have the Watch.

Thanks, Marie, for being the most wonderful of Aunties. Todd & Shannon Senzig, St. Louis MO
