When my wife, my son, and I moved to Pollocksville, we were blessed to become neighbors with Miss Mary Jane. From the very beginning, she made our family feel welcomed and comfortable.

One of the first things I noticed about Miss Mary Jane was her remarkable strength and work ethic. Even as an older woman, she possessed more stamina than many people half her age. During the warmer months, she could often be found working in her large yard—raking pine straw, picking up pinecones, and keeping everything neat and beautiful. She came from a generation that believed in hard work, strong values, and taking pride in how you lived and carried yourself.

Miss Mary Jane was also fearless. We had many encounters with snakes over the years, and whenever one appeared, we knew exactly whom to call. Miss Mary Jane would come across the yard and take care of it without hesitation. But one encounter stands out above all the rest. A snake had gotten into our garage, and my wife was screaming while both of us were afraid to go near it. Instead of me, the man of the house, going in to confront that snake, my wife and I called Miss Mary Jane. Sure enough, she came over and handled the situation fearlessly. That memory will always make me smile because it perfectly captures the courageous and dependable woman she was.

She was a woman of kindness, strength, dignity, integrity, and faith. She stood firmly upon what she believed and would not compromise her values for anyone. The way she lived reminded me of Proverbs 31:25: "Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come."

Miss Mary Jane also took a genuine interest in my family, especially my son. He was still a young boy when we moved to Pollocksville, and he would often walk over to her home, sit with her, and talk. As he grew older and went away to college, he would ask me about Miss Mary Jane whenever we talked on the telephone. When he came home from college, he would walk across the field to visit her and spend time talking with her, just as he had done when he was younger. She would always ask about him as well. The special relationship they shared meant a great deal to my son and to our entire family.

I will deeply miss my neighbor. She was an inspiration to me—not only because of how hard she worked, but because of her strength of character, her kindness, and the dignity with which she carried herself. I thank God for allowing our family to know and love Miss Mary Jane, and by faith, I look forward to seeing her again.

May God comfort and strengthen her entire family. Miss Mary Jane will always be lovingly remembered by the Hassell family.

To my wife Linda, my brother-in-laws William, Matthew, Edward, the entire Bryant, and Murphy family. I give my deepest condolences and pray that God provides peace and gives understanding. Mrs Mary B Murphy (mom as I also called her) will surely be missed. We had great talks, been fishing, enjoyed your several visits to Buffalo, NY, and you always made me feel as I was one of yours. Your wisdom and guidance was spread amongst all of us. The Lord has called you home and although hurtful to us, gives a sense of pleasure to know there's no more suffering on this earth. The Heavenly gates has opened it doors and now you will reside within his Kingdom. Spiritual, you will be within our hearts, minds, and soul. I love you and will see each other again. Rest easy in peace ❤️

The best grandma I could ever have!!! I miss you so much🩷. Forever in my heart. I love you grandma. Strongest women I ever known. I hate you left me, but GOD needed you more. Forever my number number 1 girl.

Linda, please accept my heartfelt sympathy. I remember in elementary school your Mom would get us notebook paper with pretty lines-that meant so much to us. Your Mom made sure we had the tools to do our best. Than God for Mama.

To one of my best friends. We work together and we fished together. Didn't get to spend alot of time together in our later years. But I am so glad I got to she you. You will always be in my ❤️

I worked with "lil" Mary for 6 years at Bender Burkot.I enjoyed my time with her and considered her a great friend. I went to her house and had some of her collards , Carolyn went also. Mary could cook. One time she needed help with her mower and Tommy fixed her lawnmower blades and she was very grateful. we had some good times and we all worked hard.There is a story about a rooster named spike she told us about . RIP our dear friend 🙏 What a great lady.

I will always remember you getting water for your oatmeal, looking for a item to fill a order, vacuuming the floors or talking about going fishing at Bender Burkot. My greatest memory will be from a few years ago when Sharon and I stopped by and caught you down working in your garden. Rest Easy Ms. Mary Jane!!!
