Helen Vance Mitchener, 91, formerly of Greensboro, NC, departed her earthly home Friday evening, January 1, 2021, after courageously living with Lewy Bodies Dementia for the last ten years.
Helen was a retired educator in the Guilford County School System where she began her career at Florence Elementary School in High Point, NC teaching art and elementary education. Helen also taught at Millis Road in Jamestown, NC, and Rankin Elementary in Greensboro, NC. She had a knack for making any subject matter enjoyable to learn using visual aids and developing lessons that spurred interaction from her students. There wasn’t a child Helen couldn’t reach or teach. She loved and nurtured her students as if they were her own children and expected nothing less than their best. She did not accept a ‘give up mentality’ from anyone and would often tell her students (and others), “you can do anything you set your mind to”.
Helen leaves to cherish her memories her daughter; LaTishia R. Lyles and grandson; Jacob A. Lyles of Durham, North Carolina; brothers-in-law, Clifton Mitchener (Frances) of Smithfield, North Carolina and Raymond Mitchener (Glena) of Greensboro, North Carolina, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and former students.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, 9131 Anson Way, Suite 206, Raleigh, NC 27615, or AuthoraCare Collective – Burlington, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
A public viewing will be held Friday, January 8, 2021, from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Cassie Coote-Brown Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery.

Dear Tish and Jacob, aunt Helen was one of the special angels in my life. My memories of her range from my early childhood to visiting with her in her latter years at the communities with both of you. Reminiscing... aunt Helen plaiting my hair when I was a young girl, mutual visits between our homes, a sleepover aunt Helen and uncle Wilbert invited me and other "tween girls to at their home, attending church together, eating some of those delicious dishes aunt Helen prepared and I could continue... I am continuing to pray for you . God is your refuge and strength at this difficult time. Devonne
Dear Latisha...You are an awesome daughter. You have managed this journey as a champion. I wish you and Jacob comfort at this time. Some days will be better than others. There will come a day when all your memories will make you smile. You will not know the comfort that you will have from knowing that you did all that you could do. Aunt Helen is one of those bright lights in my life. Always smiling and encouraging even when she was correcting you.
Rita

Dear LaTishia and Jacob, I hope you'll find comfort in wonderful memories of your Mother and Grandmother. May God keep her always in His care. Carol Dorsey
To the family, I am so sorry for your loss. When I was in school, I had a tendency to talk too much and ignore most of her pleas to listen. I'll never forget a stern "talking to" she gave me and her words affected me greatly. She said, "You're too beautiful and you have too much potential. Don't allow yourself to be led down the wrong path." To be honest, I never had a teacher show as much care and attention as she did. I know she will be greatly missed.
I'll see you in the rapture😇.
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
