Dean Craig started his educational career at Alabama State College Laboratory School known as Lab High. He earned a scholarship from the Ford Foundation program that identified college-ready students to bypass 12th grade and attend early enrollment at Morehouse College in 1953. It was at Morehouse that he developed an interest in business and economics. He received his M.B.A from Atlanta University and a Doctorate in Accounting from the University of Missouri – Columbia. He was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Missouri and North Carolina.
He worked in South Carolina, Missouri, and Florida as a professor before ending his career at North Carolina A&T State University. Afterward, the accounting program became the first program at an HBCU to receive accreditation in 1986.

In 1970, at Florida A&M University, Dr. Craig changed my professional career trajectory toward fully embracing the accounting profession and academia. Later in life, when most professors would have long forgotten my name, he offered me a position in the School of Business and Economics. It was an honor to observe and learn from the leadership style of the "House That Craig Built" (SOBE) School of Business and Economics. Dr. Craig was a man of integrity and strong business ethics and he expected nothing less of his students, faculty and staff. When you really got to know him he was a very compassionate gentle giant. I will summarize my reflections by saying "people need you when they need you, and not after the fact" Dr. Craig supported me when I was going through one of the most difficult periods of my life, and I shall never forget that. (Barbara Pratt) Retired SOBE Executive Assistant
